Glitter Makeup Dos and Don'ts

‘Tis the holiday season, and beauty-wise, you know what that means. BRING ON THE GLITTER!

During the holidays, wearing glitter makeup at every possible opportunity isn’t just a right—it’s almost mandatory. Don’t you want to be festive? Well, glitter = festive.
But glitter makeup, while festive and sparkly, can go very, very wrong if done improperly. From classy to tacky. From “Sugar Plum Fairy” to “Ke$ha.” Here’s how to do it right.
DO Highlight One Feature
Define eyes with a glitter eyeliner and glitter shadow, or apply sparkly lipgloss. Or brush loose glitter across cheekbones in place of blush.
DON’T Highlight Everything at Once
Although there’s no rule that says you have to pick and choose which features to play up on a normal day, it does make sense to show a little restraint where glitter is concerned. A face full of glitter looks less like a beautiful holiday fantasy and more like alien porn. (That's a bad thing, BTW.)
DO Dust Shoulders and Clavicle
Either with a shimmering body lotion or loose glitter (make sure to use super-fine particles), contour and call attention to shoulders, neck, and décolleté.
DON’T Go for the “Off-Duty Stripper” Look
Show restraint with body glitter. Here’s a helpful hint: if make friends are hesitant to hug you because they’re worried they’ll end up looking like they just got a lap dance, you’ve applied too much.
DO Wear a Sparkling Hair Accessory
Look for sequined and metallic hair accessories to dress up an updo.
DON’T Actually Put Glitter in Your Hair
Not unless you want to be shedding glitter for weeks. (Seriously—weeks.)
DO a Glitter Manicure
Even though glitter nail polish is notoriously hard to remove, the feeling of finger jewelry is so, so worth it.
DON’T Save Glitter Manis for the Holidays
Sparkly nails are right year-round, so trade in your reds and greens for lavenders and pinks. Glitter away!
