Indie Beauty Brands You Need to Know

With the big boys like Urban Decay, Benefit, and NARS in the limelight, we sometimes forget about indie beauty brands. But we shouldn't! Not only do many smaller brands passionately produce products of incredible quality and value, but they're often U.S.-made, cruelty-free, and vegan. Don't miss out; get yourself properly acquainted with these amazing brands. The little guy may be small, but he—or rather she—is mighty!

Root

I could write an entire post on Root alone. Not only is their makeup chemical-free, gluten-free, cruelty-free, and vegan, but everything is customizable. All of their pigments are safe to apply anywhere on the face. This means you can get double your money by swapping lip and eye shades. Their Pearl Powder Mineral Foundation is the best I've ever tried, and I'm not even a powder person. Still, when I wear this, no one can tell it's powder. Seriously, if you're a bareMinerals girl, give Root a try. You'll be sold—and for cheaper too. I also love their budge-proof gel eyeliner, gorgeous loose eyeshadows and blushes, and creamy Mineral Lipsticks. Root is based in Waverly, Iowa, and the products are made right here in the U.S. of A!

Enamored with their juicy, close-up shots of loose glitters, I fell in love with Violet Voss on Instagram. And if you like glitter, you're going to love them, too. You name the color—they've got a glitter for you. One is even named Hella Amazing. Plus, all their products are cruelty-free and vegan, which is hella amazing. They also have nail polishes, lashes, and loose shadows.

From their neon Elektro Cute sparkling pigments and loose shadows to their cruelty-free brushes and totally funky lashes, Sugarpill is fabulously unique. Launched in 2010 in Los Angeles, their company introduced beauty lovers to some of the most vivid, electric colors anyone had ever seen. Their Goldilux Loose Eyeshadow is one of the richest golds out there. And did I mention it's all affordable too?

Searching for a beautiful teal lipstick? That to-die-for orange? Perhaps navy? Look no further than Melt Cosmetics! Melt was started with love, by best friends Lora and Dana, and they've created lipstick colors—like 6six6—that have achieved cult status. Melt's ultra-matte, vanilla-scented lipsticks come in the most gorgeous and unique colors. And their magnetized eyeshadow-stacks contain four huge pan sizes of silky, dramatic goodness. You'll literally be lovesick for their Love Sick stack, and there's a reason the Dark Matter stack is consistently sold out!

ColourPop

Colourpop is too cheap to be so great. Their Super Shock Shadows are just $5 each, and you simply must get your hands on them. Their Lippie Stix are equally impressive in a myriad of pigmented, smooth shades and a variety of finishes. Colourpop also makes bronzers, highlighters, blushes, and lip pencils that are made cruelty-free right here in the U.S., California to be exact. I absolutely loved creating this look with ColourPop's summer collection, and it certainly won't be my last!

The Lip Bar

The Lip Bar was born in 2011 as a way of bringing bold and bodacious color to all women and empowering them to wear it, too! I first tried a lipstick from The Lip Bar in a Glossybox and instantly fell in love with the texture, color, wear, and packaging. These vegan lipsticks are $20 of goodness; their ingredients include vitamin E, organic avocado oil, fair trade shea butter, organic castor oil, pigment, and love. Yes, love. If you're a purple lover like me, you'll die for Purple Rain, and if you missed MAC's Grey Friday, try their charcoal shade Dark N Stormy.

Dose of Colors

Created by an artist, Dose of Colors is the brand that color lovers can turn to for ultra-rich, high-pigment products at non-crazy prices! I discovered Dose of Colors while on the hunt for a truly purple lip color. Not magenta or plum, but real Grimace purple. Dose of Colors had several in both glosses and lipsticks. But it doesn't end there; they also make highlighters and lashes. In case you're not totally in love yet, Dose of Colors lip products are also vegan, cruelty-, gluten-, and paraben-free.
