Abstract Nail Art That Makes a Splash ... of Color!

Are you ready for a no-skills, all-frills nail art technique you can finish in 5 minutes flat? Get ready, because this abstract nail art is so easy a very stylish caveman could do it! Round up all your favorite nail colors. Let's get started!

Color Splash Nails

This totally modern abstract nail art is only as limited as your imagination ... and your color selection! I recommend starting with a white or an off-white base color, like My Boyfriend Scales Walls from OPI. Then add as many colors as you'd like. I used four from OPI: You Are So Outta Lime!, I Just Can't Cope-Acabana, Live.Love.Carnival, and No Room for the Blues. Not sure what colors to combine? Visit a site like COLOURlovers for palette inspiration. For application, find an old artists brush that looks like it should've been tossed years ago. The more ragged, the better! You'll also want a piece of paper for your palette, lots of acetone to clean off your brush, a base coat, and a topcoat.

Color Splash Nails: Steps 1-2

1. After applying the base coat, apply two coats of white; let your nails dry.

2. Place a big drop of your first color on the palette, and dip your brush in it. Then dab the brush on your nail at different angles of the brush so your patterns don't look the same. You're going for a random look.

Color Splash Nails: Steps 3-4

3. Repeat with another color, layering it over the first color.

4. Repeat with a third color. Remember, you can use many different colors as I did, or you can keep your look monochromatic with shades from the same color family.

Color Splash Nails: Steps 5-6

5. Add as many drops of color as you'd like. Make sure to cover your whole nail, including the edge, cuticle, and sides.

6. Seal the design with a topcoat. This blends everything, giving a nice smooth finish to your Pollock-inspired masterpiece!
