Perfecting a plaid pattern is easier than slinging a stocking over the fireplace! I created this look in traditional Christmas colors, but you can turn it into a spring or summer pattern by swapping in pastels or neon brights if you like. For winter whimsy, though, gather green, red, yellow, and white polishes. I used Jade Is the New Black by OPI, Adventure Red-y by China Glaze, Solar Power by China Glaze and Alpine Snow by OPI for my colors. You may also want a nail art brush to apply the thin lines.
After applying a base coat to all your nails, follow these steps for green plaid nails. Also try alternating the base color on each nail, as I did, for a really festive look!
1. Apply two coats of green polish, and let it dry completely. Once dry, paint one thick vertical line of red and a smaller horizontal line of red as shown.
2. Wait for the red lines to dry, and then make two thin yellow lines parallel to the red lines and spaced as shown. Let those lines dry before moving to the next step.
3. Near the tip of your nail, paint a thin white horizontal line.
4. Parallel and close to the vertical yellow line, paint a dotted white line and then a dotted horizontal white line between the yellow and red horizontal lines.
Add a quick-dry topcoat to seal the design and make it last, maybe even until Christmas morning! Of course, ripping into little square boxes in the hopes they'll be filled with polish may cause a little chipping, but it's always worth it. Treat yourself this Christmas by picking up a few nail art brushes or holiday charms like this! Merry Christmas, everyone!
