The new No7 Advanced Retinol 1.5% Complex Night Concentrate is selling like hotcakes. This is the popular beauty brand’s first retinol product, a concentrate promising a groundbreaking transformation for your skin. As soon as No7 announced it would be releasing a skincare saver with dramatic results, 100,000 people flocked to the waitlist—and during the May 28 launch, the UK-based retailer Boots sold one No7 retinol every three seconds. I was curious to see whether this headline-topping retinol formula lived up to the hype, so I was thrilled when No7 sent me a sample to try.

In case you’re as clueless as I used to be about retinol, here’s a quick crash course. Retinol is an anti-aging multitasker that promotes skin elasticity and collagen production as you age. The vitamin-A derivative also prevents fine lines and wrinkles while boosting firmness and improving skin  texture. Full disclosure: Since I’m 23, I thought I was too young to be using retinol. Boy oh boy, was I wrong.

NYC Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Shari Marchbein tells More “there is no too young” when it comes to anti-aging skincare. (She even has 13-year-old clients reaching for retinol.) Dr. Marchein recommends all ages use sunscreen, Vitamin C serum, and a retinol or retinoid every day, revealing that the No7 retinol is “the multitasker of the century” because of how effectively it prevents dull, ashen-looking skin. Benjamin Franklin famously declared that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and this sentiment holds true even in skincare since young people can benefit from being proactive about their skin health.

What makes No7’s formula so special is that it combines the retinol complex with the latest peptide technology for superior results when it comes to warding off signs of premature aging. The unique formulation works overnight to lift and firm your skin, smoothing fine lines and refining your pores so you can wake up to a more radiant complexion. Since it takes time for skin to acclimate to the use of retinol, Dr. Marchbein stresses starting out slow—using a pea-sized amount of retinol for your full face twice a week before working your way up to daily use.

A retinol novice, I followed Dr. Marchbein’s advice to a tee, applying the No7 retinol twice-weekly and carefully watching for any signs of irritation to my dry, sensitive skin during the first two weeks. Right off the bat, I loved the peachy-smooth texture of the retinol, which glided seamlessly over my skin, layered well under my nightly moisturizer, and had absolutely no side effects (like peeling, breakouts, or redness).

Each morning after using the retinol, my skin was noticeably smoother and softer—so much so, I had to resist the temptation to keep my hands off my face. It typically takes three months for the No7 retinol to work its full magic of evening, firming, and dramatically reducing signs of aging, but so far, I like what I see.

So, is the new No7 retinol the Fountain of Youth, capable of reversing the aging process and turning back the hands of time? The jury’s still out on that one, but I’m delighted with how my skin looks and feels after incorporating this retinol into my skincare routine for a few weeks. Below, shop the No7 Advanced Retinol 1.5% Complex Night Concentrate (which is available at Walgreens and on No7’s site) for yourself. It’s not every day a beauty product becomes a viral hit, so this skincare powerhouse may not stay put on the shelves for very long.
