Freshen Up: 5 Best Facial Peels to Renew Tired Skin Right Now

Embrace the at-home peels. They're the best way to exfoliate dead skin cells, tighten pores, brighten discoloration, and reduce fine lines. Here are five you've got to try.

When I first heard the word "peels" in the skin care world, I was scared. All I could imagine was the procedure the character Samantha on Sex & the City had that prompted her to wear a black mourning veil the entire episode. But there's no need to worry. These products utilize a variety of acids (another scary word!): glycolic, lactic, salicylic, and fruit acids to tame breakouts, dark spots, and lines. Give these a try, and get ready to reveal beautiful skin this spring.

1. Philosophy Microdelivery One-Minute Purifying Enzyme Peel
Another great peel for the ladies with little patience and even less time! Philosophy took their popular Microdelivery Peel and condensed it into a concentrated 1 minute formula. Surely you have one minute to spare for resurfaced skin?! The lactic and salicylic acids work with fruit acids to quickly retexturize and increase cell turnover. This peel has a bit of a sticky, honey-like texture but just spread a thin layer on, wait 60 seconds, and you're done! I like to use this peel when my skin is starting to break out because the salicylic acid can make an immediate improvement.

2. Algenist Triple-Action Micropolish and Peel
I am pretty much a huge fan of anything Algenist touches. The revolutionary skincare company, rooted in biotechnology in San Francisco, has created the perfect peel. It exfoliates dead skin cells in 3 different ways: manually, chemically and enzymatically. With an exfoliating texture to simulate microdermabrasion, a 10 percent blend of powerful glycolic and patented alguronic acid, and fruit enzymes, it delivers smoother, brighter, and more youthful skin in just 3 to 5 minutes. This is my go-to peel.

3. Peter Thomas Roth FIRMx Peeling Gel
This is one of the weirdest, most fun peels I've ever tried. Massage the gel into your skin, and watch as dry skin begins to immediately slough off! You may be skeptical, thinking it is the product that's creating the gritty texture. But no! I've rubbed this on a granite countertop and no such effect occurred. This is gentle, fast and effective. I always look forward to using it!

4. Radical Skincare Age Defying Exfoliating Pads
This is the ideal peel for lazy people! Sometimes just the act of having to apply something, wait, then rinse is enough to deter you after a marathon work day. These pads deliver anti-aging Alpha Hydroxy and Beta Hydroxy acids in a convenient pad. No rinsing required! My skin looks and feels tighter after using these and my pores look smaller the next morning.

5. Murad Intensive-C Radiance Peel
When my skin is in serious need of brightening and dark, post-blemish spots abound, I reach for Murad Intensive-C Radiance Peel. It has a slight tingle at first but within 10 minutes, it leaves your skin glowing and fresh. The smell is mild and pleasant as well.
