Pretty, Please! Oil-Based Cleansers

The oil-based cleansers that I’m coveting...for this week, anyway.

It’s happened. I’ve reached the point of winter where I feel like one giant, scaly hot mess. If I were in that old Lubriderm commercial with the woman and the alligator, I’d be the alligator, except more itchy. What’s crazy is that I live in San Francisco, where the weather isn’t even that terrible—my trip to New York this month for Fashion Week reminded me of what real winter weather is like. Call me a West Coast wuss, but my skin feels dry, tight, and more or less miserable.

This is when I feel so thankful for oil-based cleansers. Without strip-happy soap bubbles that can leave skin dried-out, oil cleansers remove makeup and grime while leaving the beneficial skin oils behind to help protect skin against the elements. They’re like my knights in shiny armor.

Boscia MakeUp-BreakUp Cool Cleansing Oil—This cleanser contains peppermint and eucalyptus, so it has a neat tingly sensation. ($26,

AmorePacific Treatment Cleansing Oil—Back when I was twenty-two and could have washed my face with Borax and still looked amazing, I meticulously used this incredibly luxe cleanser and felt like a real grown-up lady. It’s the best at removing every teensy speck of eye makeup. ($50, Sephora)

Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil—Totally zesty and refreshing, with citrus and nut oils to really dig the gunk out of your pores. ($21,

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil—Made of olive oil, this cleanser works wonders on acne and clogged pores. ($26,

Shiseido Ultimate Cleansing Oil—So gentle and mild...apply it to wet or dry skin and tissue or rinse away to remove grime. ($25, Nordstrom)
