Refresh Your Face: Fall Skin Care Rehab For Every Skin Type

When the seasons change, I often notice that skin follows suit. What was once well-behaved, ladylike skin suddenly becomes rebellious, crazy lady skin, nearly overnight! I’ve definitely noticed this in my own complexion, and I’m using fall as an opportunity to rehab my skin care routine. I have some product suggestions, broken down by skin type, to intensify your cleansing, moisturizing, and treatment steps. So read on and let’s get that skin of yours back on track!

I first want to make sure you’ve established basic ground rules in your nightly getting-ready-for-bed routine. Here are some key steps and the order in which to do them:

  1. Cleanser
  2. Serum, treatment or oil
  3. Night cream
  4. Eye cream
  5. Lip balm
  6. Use a peel one to two times per week

Switching to a creamier cleanser can really help replace the moisture that the chill in the air is zapping away. Even if you’re on the oily side, a rich foaming cleanser will help to balance the moisture levels out. I adore Korres Milk Proteins Foaming Cream Cleanser because it never makes my dry skin feel tight and I also dig its scent. For more oil control, Shiseido’s new Ibuki Purifying Cleanser removes impurities and surface oils gently and completely.

Night Cream
While we sleep our skin repairs and rebuilds itself. I love to use a thick night cream at night, both for moisture and to lock in any treatment serums I’ve applied first. When we have our heat on in the house, extra moisture while you sleep is a warm welcome! Sephora Collection Age Defy Night Moisture Cream feels lovely, never irritates, and helps to support cell growth and collagen synthesis. Ole Henriksen’s Sheer Transformation is a lightweight moisturizer that is oil-free and helps to improve skin tone over time without feeling heavy.

Skin Oils
Oils are truly having a moment in skin care right now and with good reason! Your skin quickly absorbs oil due to both its consistency and familiar texture. I love to use Tarte Pure Maracuja Oil either under my regular moisturizer at night or even mixed into my moisturizer. Oilier-skinned babes will love Peter Thomas Roth’s Oiless Oil for the incredibly lightweight non-oily feel.

Applying a treatment serum can add a powerful anti-aging or anti-acne component to your routine. For anti-aging, I’m really enjoying Philosophy’s Time in a Bottle. It hits on several common complaints and works at a DNA level. I also get great results with Murad’s Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel. It’s unique in that it contains common acne fighter salicylic acid but also glycolic acid and retinol! It’s a triple-threat powerhouse.

Peels are an excellent way to remove dead skin cells to reveal brighter, younger skin. I tend to prefer a peel over an abrasive scrub. Dr. Dennis Gross’ Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel in Original Formula is ideal for first-time peel users and is gentle but effective—no dryness, no irritation! I also adore Algenist’s Triple-Action Micropolish & Peel because not only is it effective, but it’s also one of the faster peels out there—just leave it on for 3 to 5 minutes!

Peepers and puckers need skin care rehab too! A lip balm like Sephora Collection Super Nourishing Lip Balm with meadowfoam extract is perfect to have on hand and it’s only $5! Dr. Oz raved about this product so naturally I had to try it. For moisturizing and brightening the under eye area I’m loving Shiseido’s new Ibuki Eye Correcting Cream. It has an illuminating effect via rose gold light-reflecting particles and feels lightweight.
