What Is Micellar Water? This French Beauty Secret Is Everywhere Right Now

Micellar water is the best makeup remover + facial cleanser + moisturizer combo—and here's why it's set to take over your beauty routine.

When you think of washing your face, the first thing you probably reach for is your trusty soap and water combo, right? Well, French ladies seem to know what they're doing when they reach for the cleansing micellar water.

But, actually, what is micellar water, you might be wondering?

The Huffington Post talked to board-certified dermatologist Hadley King of Skinney Medspa, and she explained that micellar water is made up of micelles, which are tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules suspended in soft water.

"The idea is that micelles are attracted to dirt and oil, so they are able to draw out impurities without drying out the skin," she says.

Basically, micellar water is an all-in-one facial cleanser, makeup remover, and moisturizer. Even more, it claims to be perfect for those with sensitive or oily skin who face soap sensitivity and irritation, and it's the easiest product to pack for traveling, with its cleansing + moisturizing combo powers.

To use, simply moisten a cotton pad with a few drops of micellar water to remove makeup and excess oil like you would with a traditional makeup wipe, which is perfect to do before hopping in the shower, prepping your face for a night of beauty sleep, or starting your day with a fresh canvas. It's totally flexible with your routine. (Read: Micellar Water Hacks Will Completely Overhaul Your Beauty Routine)

Just look at how professional makeup artist Stephanie Valentine, aka glamzilla, uses the product to take off even the most intense night-out makeup.

Beauty brands like Garnier, Milk, L'Oreal, and Simple have hopped all over the micellar water trend. (For a serious bargain, might we add.) And it looks like it's bound to take over your entire beauty routine, with micellar water for hair coming soon.

Marie Claire boasts the effects of DevaCurl's new Buildup Buster, which uses micellar water to remove buildup from products, hard water, or environmental stressors, meaning it will help bring life back to lackluster curls. Though it has yet to be released, it's proving that micellar water might just be the badass beauty product we all need to try, STAT.
