We all know we’re supposed to have our “elevator pitch” ready to go at a moment’s notice: you know, the one minute explanation of who you are, what you do, why you do it, and how you can add value to the life of the person with whom you are speaking.
But, like flossing and portion control, just because we know we’re supposed to be doing it doesn’t mean we are doing it.
Luckily for me—and you—I recently came across a great tool from Harvard Business School: The HBS Elevator Pitch Builder.
This (FREE) tool takes you through building your pitch by asking you the following four questions:
- Who (you are)
- What (you do)
- Why (you are unique)
- Goal (for the pitch)
The genius bit of it is that a) you only get one small box to answer each question in b) you are offered a tip for making your answer effective c) you are given suggestions for powerful words to include.
At the end you hit “Analyze my Pitch”—and it does! You find out how long your pitch is, how strong your language is, how you can improve your choices etc., etc
I really can’t say enough about how well this has been put together.
So whether you’re trying to sell yourself or your product, raise capital for your company, or get others’ on board with your dream or your passion, you will need a great pitch.
HBS has come up with an easy way to make that happen (and it’s a lot more fun than flossing...)
