10 Things About Kesha You Probably Didn’t Know

Normally, when you think of Kesha, things like partying, sex, and glitter come to mind. But there’s far more to the “Tik Tok” singer than what’s on the surface. These 10 fun facts will make you want to jump on the Kesha bandwagon—but don’t worry, we won’t tell

Following her battle with Sony and Dr. Luke, Kesha has seen a lot of media attention lately. Most people don’t know much about the pop star, other than her legal woes, but there’s actually way more to her than what’s on the surface. If you weren’t a fan before, you will be now. These ten tidbits about Kesha will make you seriously adore her.

1. No, it’s no longer Ke$ha.

After completing rehab for an eating disorder in 2014, the singer decided to drop the famous dollar sign and go back to her real first name. She even changed her twitter handle from @Ke$haSuxx to a more cleansed and pure @KeshaRose, tweeting, “Happy to be back! Feeling healthy & working on tons of new music… I can’t thank my fans enough for all the love & support u have given me.” The pop star’s full name is Kesha Rose Sebert.

2. Before she was famous, Kesha appeared on an episode of The Simple Life

We all remember Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie as snobby best friends on The Simple Life. Well, do you remember the episode where they stayed at Kesha’s family’s house in Nashville? During season 3 of Paris and Nicole’s shenanigans, the duo got to know the Sebert family and even tried to play matchmaker for Kesha’s mom, Pebe. Although they couldn’t find love for poor Pebe, Kesha kept in touch with Paris and even attended a party at her house years later, which she ended up writing a song about. When Kesha was asked about her song “Paris Hilton’s Closet,” she said, “I barfed in [Paris’] closet. I thought it was a bathroom…. It turned out to be her closet.”

3. Kesha is an outspoken animals-rights activist.

“I just love animals, and I’m an advocate for animal rights,” she told the Phoenix New Times in 2010, “and my family has rescued dogs from all over the world. I don’t believe in animal testing. If you see me in fur, it’s always fake.”

4. She’s basically a genius

Kesha has an IQ of over 140. To put this into perspective, an average IQ score is anywhere between 85 and 114. Scoring above 145 is considered genius, and less than 1% of test takers receive scores this high. In other words: Kesha is incredibly smart. She scored a 1500 on her SAT’s, and she didn’t even attend college. In high school, Kesha loved sitting in on college lectures about the Cold War—for fun.

5. Kesha has a lower-lip tattoo that says “Suck It.”

We’re mostly curious about how much it hurt.

6. The Golden Girls is her favorite TV show

She says “it’s like Sex and the City but in the golden years, and I love that all those old ladies talk about sex as much as I do.” We can’t disagree, Kesha.

7. She calls herself a songwriter first and foremost

Kasha says she is a songwriter before she is a singer, performer, or anything else. Writing songs is her favorite part about her job. In fact, she loves writing songs so much that she has written melodies for several artists, including Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus. She must get her knack for writing from her mom, Pebe, who is also a songwriter and wrote songs for Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash. The two worked together to write lyrics for her album “Warrior.”

8. Kesha once used beer as an adhesive for her body glitter

“I used to bathe myself in beer and then roll around in [glitter] and then I started getting a skin rash. It worked, but the beer was fermenting my skin, so then I started using baby oil,” she told Jimmy Kimmel in 2013. At the peak of her sparkle obsession, the pop star was spending a few thousand dollars each month on glitter. Kesha isn’t letting anyone dull her sparkle.

9. Her album “Warrior” was inspired by her bullied fans

According to Kesha, she has a lot of gay, lesbian and transgender fans, and she hears their stories online about how they struggle with bullying. She decided to name her album “Warrior,” because she was inspired by her fans’ stories and wanted to give them strength to be warriors. The “Die Young” singer said, “That’s the energy of the record: strong, fearless, power. I wanted to hopefully inspire my fans with it.”

10. She just released her first song in 3 years

“True Colors” is the first song Kesha has released following all of the legal drama with Sony and Dr. Luke. And without their help, she and DJ Zedd dropped an amazing rendition of “True Colors,” a reworking of one of Zedd’s songs. The lyrics speak for themselves: “I won’t apologize / For the fire in my eyes / Let me show you my—my true colors.” On breaking free and being true to herself: “I’ve escaped my capture / And I have no master.” Honestly, Kesha slayed this song. We’ve got it on repeat.
