Depression or feelings of intense sadness affect thousands of people all over the world. Several celebrities have also battled depression over the years, and some still have bouts of hopelessness on occasion. These overwhelming feelings can strike at any time and don’t discriminate based on success level. Check out these 14 celebrities who have struggled with depression in the past.
The Mad Men actor has been medicated for depression in the past. Although he has been able to manage his symptoms over the years, he has admitted to needing therapy and antidepressants from time to time. “You can change your brain chemistry enough to think: ‘I want to get up in the morning; I don’t want to sleep until four in the afternoon,” Hamm said to The Observer back in 2010, referring to his medication.
Wilson was faced with such terrible thoughts and feelings back in 2007 that he actually attempted suicide. According to People Magazine, friends of the actor said that Wilson had battled demons in the past and that he also suffered from drug addiction.
The “Confident” singer was in rehab for “emotional and physical issues” back in 2010. Aside from struggling with an eating disorder, Demi admitted to People Magazine that she is bipolar. “I never found out until I went into treatment that I was bipolar. Looking back, it makes sense. There were times when I was so manic [that] I was writing seven songs in one night and I’d be up until 5:30 in the morning. I feel like I am in control now, where my whole life I wasn’t in control,” Demi said.
In 2008, Heath Ledger overdosed on prescription drugs. According to Mail Online, Ledger had a very difficult time coping with his split from Michelle Williams, and that caused him to fall into a deep depression that ultimately ended his life.
This actress may seem like she has it all together, but she struggled with postpartum depression after giving birth to her son Moses in 2006. “Luckily, [my case] was low-grade enough that I didn’t have to be hospitalized, but it’s a very debilitating thing, and I think there’s so much shame around it, and there shouldn’t be. It’s something that happens; it’s something that befalls many women after they have a baby; and for me, it ended up being a wonderful opportunity to explore some underlying issues that I think the depression kind of brought out. So I try to wrap [my head around] the whole thing, and even at the time, it was very difficult to go through—that it was happening. It was in my life for a reason, and I tried to use that opportunity to try to really get in there and heal some stuff,” Paltrow told Entertainment Tonight last year.
After her affair with Eddie Cibrian came to light, the country singer had a hard time dealing with her feelings of dread. According to E! News, Rimes checked into rehab after realizing that she couldn’t deal with her depression on her own. “I had been crying all day, staying in bed. I’ve had all eyes on me since I was 13, so there was a lot to sift through. I started dealing with emotions I had ignored,” she said in 2013.
After her divorce from Tony Parker, Eva Longoria went through a dark time. According to People Magazine, Longoria opened up to Dr. Oz about what she went through. “I didn’t know I was depressed. … That’s probably the time I got the most compliments because I was so skinny. I was not eating. I was depressed. I was sad. My diet was coffee. So people kept saying, ‘You look amazing. Divorce agrees with you,” she says. “And I was like, I don’t feel good. I have no energy.”
The Friends star has been to rehab quite a few times in his life. He has leaned on drugs and alcohol in the past, which has also been problematic for him. “Mostly it was drinking, you know, and opiates. I think I was pretty good at hiding it, but, you know, eventually people were aware,” Perry told ABC News in 2013.
The former Destiny’s Child member admitted that she has struggled with depression in her life. “I’ve dealt with depression. I had to choose to get out of bed and do whatever I needed to do to be happy,” the 34-year-old told the Associated Press in 2013.
The actor has had a lot of history with depression. He has admitted to turning to drugs to try and numb the feelings of sadness that he has experienced. Things were particularly bad for him when his mom was dying.
The actress has struggled with bipolar disorder for much of her life. According to People Magazine, Zeta-Jones went public with her diagnosis in 2011. “It’s been an intense time, in good ways and bad. You find out who you really are and who you’re married to. You find things inside yourself you never imagined were there,” she said.
The actress talked to The Who Magazine about a bout of depression that she went through following her split from ex-husband Tom Cruise. “I married [Tom] really fast and really young, but I don’t regret that because it got me Bella and Connor, and I did have a fantastic marriage for a long period. Then when it didn’t work out, I had to really dig deep and find my way through depression, but I have no regrets about all of it. It was all a part of growing up,” Kidman said.
In 2009, the actress went through a difficult time. She has struggled with anxiety and depression for many years. She has stopped taking on major movie roles because it’s too stressful for her, according to Beyond Anxiety and Depression.
The talk show host may be full of smiles on a daily basis, but it hasn’t always come easy for her. After she came out to the world, she had a very difficult time coping with the judgment. She has admitted to being depressed following this life-altering announcement.
