We’re not sure when we fell in love with Rachel McAdams, but she’s by far our favorite Canadian. From idolizing her as Regina George in Mean Girls to swooning when she played Allie alongside Ryan Gosling in The Notebook, we’ve always been a fan. Here are 23 fun facts about America’s favorite it-girl, Rachel McAdams.





Her Television Career Started on a Disney Set



Back in 2001, she graced the Disney set to play Hannah Grant, a character on one episode of The Famous Jett Jackson. The episode was the 58th episode of the series and was aired in the final season.





Theater Was Her First Love



Before she’d even auditioned for the role of Allie in The Notebook, Rachel spent her youth acting on stage with the Original Kids Theatre, a troupe in her hometown of London, Ontario, Canada. That’s Rachel second from the left!





She Won an Award for Kissing Ryan Gosling



Besides winning our hearts, she won an MTV Movie Award in 2005 for best kiss for her role in The Notebook. She and Ryan even re-created the famous film moment on stage when accepting the award. MTV must be a huge fan because they also awarded her with “Breakthrough Female” for her role in Mean Girls. She has also acquired quite the collection of Teen Choice Awards.





It’s Easy Being Green If You’re Rachel McAdams



In 2007, Rach launched Green is Sexy, a website offering environmental tips and efforts to reduce individuals’ carbon footprints. While the site is no longer available, McAdams remains committed to environmental issues. This June, she joined activist and actress Jane Fonda at a Greenpeace rally in Vancouver, Canada, to protest against oil sands development, tanker traffic, and Arctic drilling.





Yoga Is Her Cardio



Rach likes stretching her limbs through kundalini yoga. Kundalini yoga combines meditation, mantras, physical exercises, and breathing techniques, and is considered the most comprehensive of yoga traditions. She’s Not a Natural Blonde



Born a brunette, Rachel has always leaned toward blonde. Her stylist in Toronto said in an Allure article, “She’s willing to try anything as long as she keeps her hair in good shape.” She’s explored dark brown, red, and every shade of blonde imaginable, even testing out pink streaks for a brief stint in 2007.





Woody Allen Is a Huge Fan



When casting the part of Inez for his film Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen told McAdams, “It would be much more interesting for you to play this kind of character. You don’t want to go your whole life playing these beautiful girls. You want to play some bitchy parts. It’s much more interesting for you.” Inez is demanding and difficult and wants nothing to do with the City of Love, yet the role shaped the future of her career and the film was nothing short of successful.





She Couldn’t Wear Makeup until She Was in High School



Her mom, like many moms out there, made her keep her face squeaky clean until she hit high school, much to Rachel’s displeasure. In an interview with In Style, she said, “I begged and pleaded, and I actually said to my mom, ‘My lashes keep falling in my eyes, and it’s really awful. I think if I got mascara they would stay on my lids better.'”





She Used to Be an Ice Princess



From the age of four until she was 18, Rachel spent her time at the rink practicing her triple lutz. She earned regional honors in the sport and even turned down an opportunity to go pro. In an interview for Glamour she talked about her beauty game on the rink: “We would put blue eyeshadow up our eyebrows and glitter all over our faces. I probably put more effort into my skating outfits than my [regular] clothes.”





She Knows the Secret to Making a Big Mac



McAdams worked at McDonald’s for three years alongside her siblings Kayleen and Daniel. She wasn’t the best employee, but luckily before long, her other talents started to pay the bills.





She Went to College in Canada



She attended York University in Toronto to study theater, where she performed on stage and in student film productions. She graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours Degree.





Her Parents Are Totally Normal



Sandra and Lance McAdams probably never imagined their first child would become a celebrity. Sandra is a nurse, and Lance is a retired truck driver turned furniture mover. The two are currently happily living in Toronto.





She and Her Sister Are Practically Twins



Kayleen McAdams, now a celebrity makeup artist in Los Angeles, and Rachel look ridiculously alike. The only difference? Their hair is usually different colors.





She Went to the ESPYs



She and Jake Gyllenhaal, her costar in Southpaw, rocked the 2015 ESPY Awards in Los Angeles. What was she doing at the ESPYs? Southpaw is about a middleweight boxing champion who faces an intense crisis alongside his family, and this group was just the crew to promote it to.





She’s Played a Bridesmaid On-Screen and IRL



Rachel played a bridesmaid in the 2005 comedy Wedding Crashers, and this past May she was the maid of honor in her sister’s wedding.





After Mean Girls, She Took a Break from Acting



She was so busy in 2004 and 2005 due to Mean Girls, the Notebook, and Wedding Crashers, she wanted to take a break to sort out her priorities and figure out what she wanted to focus on in her career. Thank God she chose to keep acting!





She Would Rather Play Regina George Than a “Nice Girl”



While she has enjoyed playing all her roles, in an interview for the June 2015 issue of Marie Claire, Rachel McAdams said, “I prefer to be a villainess. There’s something a bit more delicious about their wickedness.” Regina couldn’t have said it better.





She Shares Her Birthday with Danny DeVito



Born on November 17, 1978, Rachel McAdams shares her birthday with Danny DeVito, Lorne Michaels, Susan Rice, and Louis XVIII among others. Not a bad day for a birthday, eh?





She Secretly Wants to Be a Superhero



In an interview with Glamour in 2013, McAdams said since she’s been in three movies about time travel, she’d like being a time-travelling superhero.





She Made Her Feature-Film Debut at the Venice Film Festival



In 2001, you could find her on set as a costar in My Name is Tanino. The film, directed by Paolo Virzi, is about a sexy Italian who chases an American tourist, played by McAdams, back to America after the two had a fling in his hometown. Later, she went on to star in Perfect Pie in 2002, another Canadian flick that sparked her career.





She Has a Crush on Ralph Macchio



Even though she dates hotties like Ryan Gosling and Josh Lucas on the reg, Rach confessed to Glamour that she had a crush on Ralph Macchio from the Karate Kid. Ralph and Rachel: almost as catchy as Ross and Rachel.





If She Could Travel in Time She’d Travel to…



…the ’60s. Rachel has an affinity for the retro look and would fit right in with the Beatlemania of the 1960s.





She and Ryan Gosling Were Born in the SAME HOSPITAL



As if they weren’t already (obviously) meant to be, Rachel and Ryan were also both born at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London, Ontario.





She’s Allergic to Horses



In order to score her role in To the Wonder, Rachel lied to the director about her horse hair allergy since she knew horses were going to be featured in the film. Her reaction on set was so bad that her eyes swelled up and she couldn’t see.
