26 Of The Biggest Celeb Couples That Called It Quits In 2016

The year 2016 saw some of the biggest celebrity splits ever. Some of them you never thought would happen, some of them you figured it was only a matter of time. Either way, they happened, and we're totally not over it.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

The end of Brangelina had the whole world in complete shock (tbh, we’re still not 100 percent over it). After (a totally controversial) meeting in 2004, the parents of six got married just two years ago, and their relationship came to a close in 2016. The scary allegations against Brad Pitt during the demise of the power couple just made everything worse.

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson

This straight-up stunning couple dated for 10 years but parted ways in 2016. Many wondered why the two never ended up tying the knot. Apparently, it was because neither are religious. As Joshua Jackson (aka Pacey forever) told Glamour: “I can tell you why we’re not married: We’re not religious. I don’t feel any more or less committed to Diane for not having stood in front of a priest and had a giant party.” However, the relationship ended amid rumors that rumors that Diane Kruger cheated with The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus.

Amber Heard and Johnny Depp

It most certainly has been a rocky road for Amber Heard and Johnny Depp, who ended their marriage in 2016. Although they were only married for 15 months, news of their split was pretty surprising. After the breakup, Heard alleged she was a survivor of Depp’s domestic abuse and donated all her $7 million from the divorce settlement to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and the ACLU. Go Amber!

Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama

Many people were expecting a 2016 engagement but Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama split up instead (total sad face). The announcement was made on Instagram, six years after the pair first started dating. The two decided that they were just “better as friends.”

Kirsten Dunst and Garrett Hedlund

On the Road costars Kirsten Dunst and Garrett Hedlund have ended their four-year romance. The two had been living together in Los Angeles and pals believed that an engagement was well on its way. Now, Dunst has been spotted with Fargo co-star Jesse Plemons, and Hedlund, funny enough, has been spotted with another half of a splits-ville couple Diane Kruger.

Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney

Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney called off their engagement over the summer, after five years together. The two met on the set of Gaga’s video for “You and I.” It’s unknown if she returned the awesome heart-shaped engagement ring.

Marc Anthony and Shannon De Lima

While a lot of people weren’t surprised by this split, the timing was a little strange. The divorce announcement came just a few days after Marc Anthony locked lips with his ex-wife, Jennifer Lopez, after the Latin Grammys. Anthony and Shannon De Lima married in November 2014 and reportedly split because they didn’t have a lot in common. But could there be a J. Lo/Marc reunion?

Naya Rivera and Ryan Dorsey

The Glee actress and her husband split after just two years of marriage, after typing the knot in a surprise ceremony. They welcomed their son, Josey, in September 2015.

Kat Dennings and Josh Groban

Despite us having high hopes for our favorite oddball couple, Kat Dennings and Josh Groban, they ended their two-year relationship over the summer. “It was a mutual breakup,” reports E! News. “They are still friends and care about each other, but it’s not the right time for them now as a couple.”

Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston

We can’t help but think about Tom Hiddleston’s “I heart T. S.” shirt from her annual Fourth of July bash at her home in Rhode Island! After only a couple months of internet mania, the singer and her actor beau, aka Hiddleswift, decided to part ways. Do we now get a breakup album from Taylor Swift?

Will Kopelman and Drew Barrymore

This was another split that made us want to ugly girl cry in our pillows all night. After nearly four years of marriage and two daughters, Will Kopelman and Drew Barrymore called it quits in April.

“Sadly our family is separating legally, although we do not feel this takes away from us being a family. Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually, you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on. Our children are our universe and we look forward to living the rest of our lives with them as the first priority,” the couple said in a joint statement to Us Weekly.

Zac Efron and Sami Miro

After two years of dating, Zac Efron and Sami Miro decided to split. Shortly after the news broke, people noticed that Efron deleted all evidence of his relationship on social media. Apparently, things didn’t end well for these two. Eek!

Lea Michele and Matthew Paetz

The Scream Queens actress was reportedly left heartbroken when Matthew Paetz dumped her after two years together. Allegedly, the breakup left Michele “blindsided,” as she had just done an interview gushing about how her late ex Cory Monteith would approve of Paetz.

Peter Facinelli and Jaimie Alexander

Wedding bells didn’t sound for this couple, who ended their engagement in 2016. Twilight series star Peter Facinelli and Blindspot‘s Jaimie Alexander were engaged for 11 months before their split.

Khloe Kardashian and James Harden

OK, so maybe no one actually thought that Khloe Kardashian was going to marry James Harden, but their split was a pretty big deal. Why? Well, because this relationship fell apart when KoKo needed to support her ex, Lamar Odom, after an overdose that nearly claimed his life.

Summer Phoenix and Casey Affleck

This extremely private couple’s 10-year marriage came to a close this year. Casey Affleck was embroiled in sexual harassment allegations when working on Summer’s brother Joaquin Phoenix’s movie I’m Still Here, though it’s not clear if that’s what ended their long (definitely by Hollywood standards) relationship.

Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts

After 11 years together, Liev and Naomi confirmed their split to Entertainment Tonight.

“Over the past few months, we’ve come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple. It is with great love, respect, and friendship in our hearts that we look forward to raising our children together and exploring this new phase of our relationship. While we appreciate your curiosity and support, we ask the press to be mindful of our children and respect their right to privacy.”

Mariah Carey and James Packer

Call it the curse of the reality TV show if you must. Mariah Carey and her billionaire boyfriend called off their engagement shortly after filming Mariah’s World. It seems now Mariah is getting cozy with her backup dancer

Bella Hadid and The Weeknd

Although the model and the “Starboy” singer called in quits this year, they remain the best of friends. In fact, many people believe Bella Hadid and The Weeknd are still in love and that they could get back together in the future.

Jennifer Lopez and Casper Smart

J. Lo and her dancer love have called it quits once again. There is a lot of love between the two, and Casper is very close with Lopez’s two children, so who knows if this split is for good?

Sia and Erik Anders Lang

The “Cheap Thrills” singer split from her husband of two years in 2016. Their separation announcement was made in December (just to cap off this terrible year for celeb couples) and the former pair said they were committed to staying friends.

Nina Dobrev and Austin Stowell

Although these two only dated for seven months, fans of The Vampire Diaries actress were hoping to see Nina Dobrev find a lasting love. Let’s face it: No one is over the real life Delena pairing of Dobrev and former boyfriend (and now married) co-star Ian Somerhalder.

Iggy Azalea and Nick Young

Iggy Azalea and Nick Young were only engaged for a year before calling it quits. Many believe that the cause may have been a crazy cheating scandal that rocked their relationship earlier this year.

Jana Kramer and Mike Caussin

Before competing on Dancing With The Stars, Jana Kramer was dealing with heartbreak. She and Mike Caussin, who checked himself into rehab earlier this year, split just months after welcoming their daughter.

Ariana Grande and Ricky Alvarez

The “Side to Side” singer split from her backup dancer beau in July. Don’t feel too bad for her though, because Ariana Grande just released a song and music video with her rumored new BF Mac Miller, and it’s super hot.

Steve-O and Kat Von D

The Jackass star and his makeup maven and tattoo queen, Kat von D, split after a few months of dating. In the aftermath of the split, both stars scrubbed social media of all evidence of their couplehood.
