9 Reasons Bradley Cooper Isn’t Just a Pretty Face

Bradley Cooper may have been named People‘s Sexiest Man Alive in 2011, but he is so much more than a pretty face. From graduating college with honors to speaking fluent French, Cooper is a heartthrob on every level.

If you have found yourself growing more and more jealous of Bradley Cooper’s model girlfriend Irina Shayk—she was on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue in 2011, yikes—you’re not alone. Cooper may be your favorite blue-eyed superstar, but it gets better. He’s smart and determined, and even more than that. Here are nine reasons why we’re swooning over Bradley Cooper.

1. He graduated with honors from Georgetown University.
While Cooper knew he wanted to be an actor, he also knew he wanted to get his degree first. So, in 1997, he graduated from Georgetown with a B.A. in English. “I wrote my senior thesis on the film adaptations of Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita,” he told People magazine in 2011. He went on to get an M.F.A in acting from Actors Studio Drama School at The New School in 2000.

2. He’s fluent in French.
During his stay at Georgetown, Cooper became fluent in French and even spent six months as an exchange student in Aix-en-Provence, France, before his graduation. And if you’re frantically googling “Bradley Cooper speaking French” right now, yes, it’s as adorable as you’d think.

3. He was on the rowing team at Georgetown.
Cooper sure made the most out of his Georgetown experience. Besides studying abroad in France, Cooper acted with the Nomadic Theatre, worked for the Philadelphia Daily News, and crewed on the Georgetown rowing team. In an interview with Esquire in 2011, Cooper’s rowing coach said, There is a fierce, fierce, fierce fire in that guy. That determination of his—nobody should ever underestimate that.”

4. He’s a gourmet cook.
While his favorite hobby is said to be riding his many motorcycles, Cooper is also an enthusiastic cook. “I grew up in an Italian family, and my grandmother loved to cook,” he explained to People, “We made homemade spaghetti and ravioli all the time. I just built a new kitchen, and I can’t wait to use it.”

5. He doesn’t drink.
Despite his drunken antics in The Hangover and its sequels, Cooper doesn’t drink alcohol. He has been sober since 2004 after a period of addiction in his 20s.

6. He is a big music buff.
While he’s said on a number of occasions that Radiohead is his favorite band, Cooper is always happy to talk music. He even dabbles in playing music himself. “I have a saxophone, a piano, and a couple guitars at home. I like to fool around with instruments,” he told People.

7. He’s a talented and determined actor.
While he does have his very own Razzie Award (Remember All About Steve? Let’s not talk about it.), Cooper continues to be recognized where it counts. He’s been nominated for three consecutive Academy Awards for Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, and American Sniper, which he also produced. Additionally, Cooper was nominated for a Tony Award after his 2014 performance in The Elephant Man.

8. He’s a family man.
Cooper takes his family relationships very seriously. When his dad’s lung cancer worsened, Cooper went back to his hometown of Philadelphia to spend the final five months with his parents. He’s worn his father’s wedding ring since his death in 2011. Soon after, he invited his mother to live with him in Los Angeles. “I love having her,” Cooper told Esquire. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

9. He stands up for women’s pay equality.
After learning what Amy Adams was paid for her part in American Hustle, Cooper joined his “work wife” Jennifer Lawrence in speaking out against the gender pay gap in Hollywood.  “She worked everyday on that movie and got paid nothing,” Cooper said. “It’s really horrible actually, it’s almost embarrassing.” To help narrow the gap, he even offered to help actresses negotiate their salaries in the future. What a gentleman!
