Amber Heard Did Something Amazing with Her $7M Divorce Settlement from Johnny Depp

She will be splitting the donations between two charities.

After an extremely controversial and public break-up, Amber Heard and Johnny Depp finally decided to settle their divorce outside of court on Tuesday. The former couple confirmed the settlement in a joint statement to PEOPLE saying their relationship was “intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love.”

In the same statement, Heard confirmed her decision to donate the entire $7 million she received in her divorce settlement to charity. “As described in the restraining order and divorce settlement, money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves,” Heard wrote.

She will divide the money between the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, where she’s worked and volunteered for ten years, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The executive director of the ACLU issued a statement thanking Heard, in which he assured her that the donation would go toward “helping other women live safely and freely.”

“I know these organizations will put the funds to good use and look forward to continuing to support them in the future,” Heard continued in her statement. “Hopefully, this experience results in a positive change in the lives of people who need it the most.”

She also added that she plans to donate to these charities in the future because of the close attachment she feels to them.

The settlement ended the couple’s 15-month marriage and led to a judge dismissing the domestic violence case against Depp. The court also terminated the temporary restraining order filed against him for physically and emotionally abusing Heard several times throughout their marriage.
