Daisy Ridley’s “No Makeup” Selfie Is the Best Thing on Instagram Today
by Rachel Weeks
Daisy Ridley Instagram post about self esteem is PERFECT.
Of course, we are huge fans of Daisy Ridley all the time, but we have some extra love for her today. This afternoon, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress wrote an inspirational and totally honest Instagram post about self esteem and social media. Who would have thought a “no makeup” selfie would hit us right in the #FEELS?
Women are constantly pressured to look beautiful, but are also shamed for wearing a lot of makeup and altering their photos. This contradiction has led to a wave of additional pressure to be effortlessly beautiful and effortlessly happy, especially on social media. But in reality, this isn’t always possible. And Ridley had something to say about it.
“3 of these statements aren’t true…” Ridley writes, referencing the Snapchat caption on the image. (She’s obviously wearing makeup and using a filter.) “Social media is great but also a bit scary,” she continued, “cause what people post is the most filtered, most carefully chosen and cleverly edited moments of their lives. And self esteem is a huge issue for people around the world. My skin isn’t great so I don’t post no make up selfies, much as I’d like to; I have a trainer urging me on in workouts and don’t include all the times I say ‘I can’t do it’ and I don’t smile all the time but I like to share the pictures where I am.”
Preach, sister! We can’t base our self-love on what we see on others’ social media accounts, because it’s only the best parts of their lives. Other people have breakdowns and make mistakes and eat junk food too; they just don’t advertise it on Instagram! Self-esteem and body confidence isn’t an easy thing to achieve, but your life doesn’t have to be Insta-worthy 100 percent of the time to love yourself. Daisy Ridley knows this as well.
“I actually do love myself,” Daisy concluded. “I try to think good thoughts always and am surrounded by the most wonderful people, so I’m keeping it balanced (like the Force, obvs). Just thought I’d say :)”
There you have it, ladies. Even the most bad-ass character in the Star Wars galaxy has to work at being confident. So try not to compare yourself to other people when you’re scoping out Instagram. Life is more than the pretty pictures.
