Mel Gibson: That (Dude)’s Messed Up
by Nikki Deterding
There’s endless speculation about the fuster cluck that’s developing between Mel Gibson and his baby-mama ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva. He’s psycho. She’s a gold digger. No, he’s not. No, she’s not. There’s Team Mel, and then there’s Team Oksana.
People are saying that she shouldn’t have recorded him; others are saying that she had to tape the conversations, because she didn’t think anyone would believe her without evidence. Throw in the extortion charges, physical abuse, and death threats, and this Hollywood debacle rivals the drama of a prime-time soap opera.
But what I really want to know is how, aside from all the interpersonal shizzle going on between these two, so many people don’t seem put off in the slightest by his remarks. What’s up with that?
I mean, we already know about the anti-Semitism accusations that people have been throwing his way over the years (and for good reason), but how can anyone—and I mean anyone—listen to these phone recordings and not be extremely offended by the things coming out of his mouth?
Take a step back and really think about it. Yeah, he was mad (more like flying-off-the-freakin’-handle, on-the-fast-track-for-committal mad) and yeah, she might know how to push his buttons, but he still said what he said. And this isn’t the first time he’s been out of control; there have been many different instances in which he’s made completely outrageous comments.
I’m deeply offended by all the sexist and misogynistic comments in his rants, and also by the racial slurs he’s thrown around so carelessly.
In fact, I think Mel has succeeded in offending every single race, gender, sexual orientation, and religion. I guess the only good thing about him is that his hatred doesn’t discriminate.
I’m not down with equal-opportunity haters, and I have only one thing to say to you, Mel: that’s seriously messed up.
And please don’t call and yell at me.
The onslaught of news, personal stories, and random information we hear throughout the day can leave us in a state of shock. This series is dedicated to the various things we find and have no other words to say but “That’s Messed Up.” If you come across anything that makes you want to utter those same words, please send it to Nikki at email@example.com.
