It’s no secret that Shailene Woodley is super down-to-earth. Most of the things she owns fit in a suitcase, and she is a firm believer in natural remedies. Not only does she kick ass on the silver screen in the Divergent series, but she’s pretty passionate about being a voice for America’s 99 percent. This week, surrounding the release of her latest film Snowden, Net-A-Porter’s The Edit magazine had a sit-down with the 24-year-old actress. Here’re the things we learned about Woodley from her candid interview.

1. She Had a Super Unique Upbringing

Woodley’s counselor mother and her psychologist father led to her being forced to deal with her anger in different ways. When she and her brother would get in fights, they would have to stand on the front lawn and hug it out. She said: “The whole time you’re just seething, you’re disliking this person with so much energy, but if you let go you have to stay there for an extra hour. That was the kind of reverse, manipulative psychology my parents were into!”

2. Her Parents Didn’t Side With Her When She Was Teased At School

The “manipulative psychology” wasn’t reserved for her and her brother. When she came home from school with hurt feelings, her parents always urged her to see the other side of the story. She said: “It’s enabled me to recognize that no one’s evil. They’re probably hurting and can’t express themselves, get no love at home, so it’s repeated. It gave me a broader outlook: just put yourself in another person’s shoes.”

3. She Says Her Family Is Still “Super F—ed Up”

Despite having a hippie-like approach to anger management, Woodley said her family isn’t without its problems. She wouldn’t trade them, though. She said her family is her “everything,” and that they’d do anything for each other. Total mindset goals, Shailene.

4. She Doesn’t Take Her Position in Hollywood for Granted

She recognizes that people in Hollywood are privileged beyond belief, and she doesn’t want to feed the beast. She said people in the industry don’t see the 99 percent because they don’t have to. But Woodley is a firm Bernie Sanders supporter and has even protested the Dakota Access Pipeline in Washington D.C. Seems like Hollywood could learn a thing or two from her activist nature.

5. She’s a Huge Advocate for Sex Education

“As a young woman you don’t learn how to pleasure yourself, you don’t learn what an orgasm should be, you don’t learn that you should have feelings of satisfaction,” she said. What would happen if young women were taught how to masturbate in school? She said she wonders how many fewer people would get herpes at 16 or pregnant at 14. Thanks, girl, for starting valuable conversations about young women’s health.
