‘Beauty And The Beast’ Will Introduce Disney’s First Openly Gay Character

The upcoming live-action Beauty and the Beast reboot will go down in history for this.

The classic "Tale as Old as Time" is about to have a bit of an updated twist.

While the premiere isn't for another two weeks, the upcoming Beauty and the Beast remake is already making a serious splash. And while the ultimate story might be celebrating the romance between Belle (Emma Watson) and the Beast (Dan Stevens), director Bill Condon revealed in an interview with Attitude that a history-making subplot of the movie will actually portray Disney's first ever "exclusively gay moment," on film. And the world is more than ready for it.

Josh Gad will play the character of LeFou, Gaston's sidekick in the Disney classic, and we find out that he is exploring his own sexuality throughout the movie.

"LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston," Condon told Attitude. "He's confused about what he wants. It's somebody who's just realizing that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that's what has its payoffs at the end, which I don't want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie."

The company has hinted at homosexuality before, with a lot of speculation surrounding Frozen's Elsa. However, this short but explicitly gay scene is so incredibly important for LGBTQ representation on-screen and to send a message that this kind of love is completely normal and natural.

Television host Chris Parente tweeted at Gad, asking him to confirm that this history-making moment was indeed included in the film, saying that it would "mean a lot to me, and gay kids everywhere." Gad replied via twitter that he is, "beyond proud of this."

Us too, Josh. Us too.
