Brie Larson to Play Captain Marvel in an Upcoming Film

Oscar-winner Brie Larson is slated to play Captain Marvel in a new film slated for 2018 release. She made the big announcement at this year’s Comic-Con, and will become the first female Marvel character with a standalone film.

Brie Larson is ready and raring to join the Marvel cinematic universe. The Academy-Award-winning actress has been rumored to play Captain Marvel for months, but nothing was formally announced until this year’s Comic-Con. Larson celebrated on Twitter with just the perfect tweet.

Captain Marvel is a huge jump forward for Marvel Studios, because her standalone film will be the first female-fronted superhero flick the studio has released and one of the first female-fronted films in the new superhero movie resurgence, being predated only by this year’s Wonder Woman movie.

Casting Larson in the role is also important, because she’s an actor with genuine ability and shows that Marvel is focused on taking Captain Marvel seriously as a edition to the universe.

Because the DC/Warner Bros. track record is spotty at best, Wonder Woman will be the first foray into a female-fronted superhero franchise but won’t necessarily be the biggest. There is a very strong chance that Captain Marvel will be the first tentpole female superhero to get a viable franchise centered totally around her: complete with toy lines, female-centric marketing, and solid studio backing.

Captain Marvel is currently slated for a 2019 release—Marvel is definitely taking a long-view approach to planning its universe—but nobody would be all that surprised to see Larson don the Captain Marvel costume long before that. There are seven Marvel films scheduled between now and then, including the third Avengers movie.

In the meantime, Larson continues to endear herself to fans by jumping into the character prep with both feet. This week, she tweeted out a photo of herself laying on the couch, reading Captain Marvel Vol. 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More by Kelly Sue DeConnick and David Lopez and rocking a completely enviable Captain Marvel jacket. Get it, girl.
