The Oscars: Then vs. Now

The Oscars: Then vs. Now

We’d like to thank the Academy… For blessing us with these kick-ass red carpet styles.

The very first Academy Award was presented at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in 1929. A total of 15 statuettes, commonly known as “Oscars,” were awarded in front of a crowd of 270 people. The cost to get into the event was five dollars (what would amount to $70 in 2017). The event only lasted 15 minutes.

The 89th Academy Awards took place on February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Host Jimmy Kimmel took us on a whirlwind journey that lasted nearly four hours, between performances from Justin Timberlake and John Legend, #GaryFromChicago, and—how could we forget?!—the “Best Picture” mix-up.

But by far one of the highlights of every Academy Awards is the red carpet attire. Sure, the whole award thing is great and all, but what we really love to critique are the OUTFITS. More specifically, we love to compare our favorite celebrities’ ensembles to their ghosts of Oscars past. If you’re Ryan Gosling, you manage to look good every year. But if you’re not, you’ve likely had some ups and downs as far as red carpets go.

Here are some throwbacks to Academy Award nominees walking their first Oscars red carpet.
