These 10 Celebrity Impersonations Of Other Famous Icons Are Damn Perfect
by Jennifer Lafferty
Who could have guessed Ariana Grande could do such a great impression of Celine Dion?! Check out this and 10 more of our favorite celebrity impressions performed by their fellow celebs.
There’s something weirdly surreal about a spot-on celebrity impression, especially when the performer is one you know so well. So, for good reason, celebrity-on-celebrity impressions have become a staple of late-night entertainment. Whether you prefer the Wheel of Musical Impressions on The Tonight Show or some good, old-fashioned Saturday Night Live sketches, there are lots of good impressions to go around.
Here are 11 of our absolute favorites.
1. Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump
Saturday Night Live viewers went wild over Alec Baldwin’s larger-than-life impression of the 2016 GOP presidential candidate. But the Trump spoof wasn’t nearly as popular at the Baldwin house. Alec’s wife Hilaria told Vanity Fair that she doesn’t like him rehearsing the controversial billionaire at home, as they have three impressionable kids there. The couple’s daughter, Carmen, even painted her face orange to look more like Donald Trump.
2. Justin Timberlake as Jimmy Fallon
Justin Timberlake’s debut impression of BFF Jimmy Fallon went over so well on SNL that Timberlake was asked to do it again on Fallon’s Tonight Show. Of course, Fallon had lots of impersonations of his own back when he was on SNL, but but now the shoe appears to be on the other foot.
3. Gilda Radner as Barbara Walters
Late comedienne Gilda Radner is well remembered for her wacky Saturday Night Live characters, but her best known was perhaps her eccentric talk show host based on Barbara Walters. The fact that Walters was a serious, respected anchorwoman, maximized the silliness effect, especially when Radner poked fun at Walter’s speech pattern, calling herself Baba Wawa.
4. Matt Damon as Matthew McConaughey
Certain celebrities just scream out to become impressions, including dreamboat-turned-dramatic actor Matthew McConaughey, who’s had more than his fair share. While he isn’t necessarily known for his impressions, Matt Damon’s Matthew McConaughey is undeniably the strongest. He first shared it with the world on Late Show with David Letterman in 2006, he delivered this appropriate line: “Mr. Soderbergh, today’s scene, I think, would be a good opportunity for me to take my shirt off.”
5. Kate Hudson as Matthew McConaughey
Another unlikely McConaughey impressionist is the actor’s two-time castmate Kate Hudson. She impressed the audience with her Southern drawl at the American Cinematheque Awards in 2014. She told a story about a shirtless—obviously—McConaughey using his special brand of charm to cheer her up while the co-stars were getting their scuba diving certification for Fool’s Gold.
6. Norm Macdonald as Burt Reynolds
As far as iconic Saturday Night Live impressions go, Norm Macdonald’s cocky, glib Burt Reynolds is high on the list. Macdonald’s portrayals of Reynolds as a wisecracking contestant on Celebrity Jeopardy! are uncanny enough to make you wonder if the former SNL castmate might share some DNA with Reynolds.
7. Bradley Cooper as Christopher Walken
Christopher Walken’s distinct New York accent just begs to be imitated and Bradley Cooper is one of several stars who have answered the call. Cooper has impressions of a wide range of actors, from Robert DeNiro to Owen Wilson, but one of his best is the eccentric Christopher Walken, who he has impersonated on a number of shows, including The Actors Studio.
8. Billy Crystal as Fernando Lamas
Comedic actor Billy Crystal first made a name for himself on TV before moving to films like When Harry Met Sally. Some of his most popular television appearances were his mid-1980s SNL skits, where he did impressions of classic movie star Fernando Lamas hosting a fictional talk show. His most memorable lines were, “You look marvelous,” and, “It’s better to look good than to feel good.”
9. Christina Aguilera as Britney Spears
Christina Aguilera has a hidden talent for musical impressions! Her impersonation of rival pop diva Britney Spears singing “This Little Piggy” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon blew both audiences and host away. We can’t stop watching it. Aguilera did have the advantage of having worked with Spears on the Mickey Mouse Club all those years ago, but that’s some serious talent.
10. Tina Fey as Sarah Palin
Who could forget Tina Fey’s surreal SNL impersonation of outspoken Alaska governor and 2008 GOP Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin. While impressions like this are usually just entertaining, Fey’s cartoonish imitation of Palin made such a strong impression that some believe it directly impacted the outcome of the 2008 election! That’s one hell of an impression if it can make political history.
11. Ariana Grande as Celine Dion
Pop sensation Ariana Grande amazed us all with her spot-on impersonation of Celine Dion, including a hilarious rendition of a Beauty and the Beast duet with Jimmy Fallon in 2015. But Grande has impressively long list of other musical impressions as well, featuring Britney Spears, Shakira, Rihanna, and Whitney Houston. She says the celebs “don’t get mad” because she’s a big fan and “… because they know that I come from a place of love.”
