We’re So Stoked for Zendaya’s Groundbreaking Role in the New Spider-Man
by Faith Brar
She will be joining the super hero flick as Mary Jane.
Zendaya’s role in Spider-Man: Homecoming has finally been revealed and it’s not what everyone thought it would be. When the famous Disney Channel star was cast as a mystery character in Sony’s upcoming reboot, it was rumored that she would play a new character from Peter Parker’s high school. That said, in an exclusive story, The Wrap revealed that the 19-year-old has actually been cast as Mary Jane—Spidey’s one and only true love interest.
If you’ve read any of the Spider-Man comics or seen even one of the movies, you know that MJ’s character has been strictly Caucasian. To be precise, a very fair skinned damsel in distress with light eyes with beautiful red hair—so casting Zendaya in the role is quite a refreshing change.
That said, several less open-minded fans have already been trolling social media about why they aren’t happy with this surprise. But let’s be real, more diversity is ALWAYS a good thing. Black female representation on the big screen is slowly taking a turn for the better, with women of color taking on more roles that would usually be reserved for white women.
A new wave of blockbusters like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, The Flash and Black Panther will feature Zoe Saldana, Kiersy Clemons and Lupita Nyong’o respectively—all with lead roles in the films. And now, Zendaya is also part of that growing list.
Though these recent efforts for inclusively are admirable, they are still just efforts. We still have a long way to go when it comes to truly embracing women and men of color in the film industry—but at least the wheels have started to turn.
