Women are Taking Over Your TV in Dozens of New Female-Led Show Premieres

Looking at the upcoming TV pilots and series premiering in the 2016-2017 season, it’s exciting to see how many of them are centered on strong female protagonists. Check out our guide to the most promising new female-led series.


The Enforcers



This FOX buddy comedy stars Niecy Nash and Christine Woods as two very different single moms whose dreams of fighting real crime are derailed when they’re partnered to handle petty violations like noise complaints in the Code Enforcement Department.





This CW drama set in the 1880s stars Laura Bent as a young woman who witnesses the birth of legendary villains after traveling from NYC to Transylvania in search of her father. Aiding her is a wrongfully disgraced Scotland Yard detective.


Model Woman



ABC’s fictionalized series based on Robert Lacey’s book Model Woman: Eileen Ford and the Business of Beauty, stars Andie MacDowell as the head of a renowned modeling agency, and takes place during the late 1970s “model wars”.





CW’s Frequency is one of the many upcoming films-to-TV series reboots. This re-imagining, starring Peyton List (The Flash), centers on a female police detective capable of communicating via ham radio with her estranged father, who died in 1996.


The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez



Described as “MacBeth with a Cuban twist”, ABC’s The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez follows the self-made Miami entrepreneur Eva (Gina Torres), who’s at risk of being destroyed by her extreme ambition and the enemies who could expose her dangerous secrets.


Good Fortune



This NBC ensemble comedy starring Diane Guerrero (Jane the Virgin) centers on a rigid young woman whose life is turned upside down when she begins taking advice from a mysterious fortune teller.


Untitled Lee Daniels’ Project



This FOX drama starring Queen Latifah and Benjamin Bratt is written by acclaimed filmmaker Lee Daniels (Monsters’ Ball) and revolves around three young women who form a musical act, with dreams of the big time.





This CBS series offers a contemporary take on the protagonist from the classic Nancy Drew mystery book series. Sarah Shahi (Person of Interest) plays Nancy, re-imagined as an NYPD detective who uses her uncanny observational skills to solve crimes.


Cruel Intentions



Sarah Michelle Gellar returns as the cunning Kathryn Merteuil, who vies for control in NBC’s TV series adaptation of film Cruel Intentions. The series co-stars Taylor John Smith as the late Sebastian Valmont’s corruptible young son.


Me & Mean Margaret



NBC’s buddy comedy series Me & Mean Margaret starring Stockard Channing (The Good Wife), centers on an iconic actress whose brutal honesty can be offensive, and the ambitious 27-year-old lawyer who’s forced to babysit her.


Charity Case



Courteney Cox returns to series television with this FOX comedy, as the well-meaning widow of a billionaire; she inherits his fortune but becomes disillusioned by the less than glamorous aspects of trying to change the world.





Hayley Atwell (Marvel’s Agent Carter) stars in this ABC drama about the brilliant but ne’er-do-well daughter of a former president, who’s blackmailed into heading LA’s newly created Conviction Integrity Unit, where she and her team investigate likely cases of wrongful convictions.


Untitled Tracy Wigfield Project



This NBC comedy from writer Tracy Wigfield (30 Rock) and executive producer Tina Fey focuses on a close mother/daughter relationship that gets complicated when mom becomes an intern at her daughter’s workplace. The series stars Cougar Town’s Briga Heelan.





Netflix has ordered 10 episodes of the provocative psychological thriller Gypsy from writer Lisa Rubin (I Was Here). The story follows therapist Jean Holloway, who develops intimate and dangerous relationships with people in her patients’ lives.


The Mick



In this fish-out-of-water comedy from FOX, starring Kaitlin Olson, a crude, hard-living woman moves to affluent Greenwich, CT to raise her wealthy sister’s spoiled children after her sister flees the country to escape federal indictment.





The ABC drama Presence starring Stephanie Sigman (Spectre) tells the story of former Army counter-insurgency operative, Presence Foster, who accidentally embarks on a career as an unlicensed P.I., and must navigate a colorful and divergent cross-section of L.A.





FOX’s sports drama Pitch, starring Kylie Bunbury, Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Elisabeth Shue, celebrates female athleticism. The show follows a young female baseball pitcher who breaks new ground by becoming the first woman to play in the major leagues.
