Even superstars have embarrassing moments—arguably even more embarrassing because of all the cameras around—but gracefully handling a fiasco under pressure is the mark of a great celebrity. Beyoncé has proven time and time again that she knows how to navigate a media scare with all the elegance and style of a queen.
8. When Fans Attack
At a concert in Montreal back in July 2013, Beyoncé got her famous mane of curls tangled in a fan during the power ballad "Halo." But even as her aides pulled and later cut her loose from the fan, she continued to sing like the true professional she is. She even saw the humor in the situation, posting the video to her Instagram page with a rewritten verse of "Halo" to fit the situation: "Gravity can't begin/ to pull me out of the fan again/ I felt my hair was yankin'/ From the fan that's always hatin."
7. The "Elevator Incident"
After the 2014 Met Gala, Jay Z, Beyoncé, and younger sister Solange entered an elevator together and—as Beyoncé describes in "Flawless"—shit went down. There aren't many who didn't see the security footage of Solange apparently attacking Jay Z, but very few know what the incident was really about. Soon after, the three released a joint statement saying, "There has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident. But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it." Beyoncé's recent realease of Lemonade has only pushed the rumors further. Many assume it was over Jay's alleged infidelity, which the couple seems to be working through, artistically and otherwise.
6. Breaking Up Is Hard to Do
Divorce rumors have always surrounded the Beyoncé/Jay Z power couple, but neither party has let the rumor mill get them down. At the peak of the divorce chatter, Bey published a sexy Instagram post sporting a jersey with her beau's last name and not much else. The couple always knows when to make a happy public appearance with the family to settle any talk of a split.
5. Oh Say, Did She Sing?
The former Destiny's Child singer had the distinct honor of performing the national anthem at the second inauguration of President Barack Obama. But soon after the big day, rumor spread that the pop star had lip-synched her performance. She didn't deny it: "I practiced until my feet bleed. I did not have time to rehearse with the orchestra. Due to no proper sound check, I did not feel comfortable taking a risk. It was about the President and the inauguration, and I wanted to make him and my country proud, so I decided to sing along with my prerecorded track, which is very common in the music industry. I'm very proud of my performance." Later, at a Super Bowl press conference, Queen Bey proved she can still rock it with a flawless impromptu version of the national anthem, followed by a cheerful "Any questions?"
4. Ring the Alarm, Indeed
After a particularly vigorous bout of hair flipping, Beyoncé took a serious misstep during a concert in Orlando in 2007 that caused her to tumble down a flight of stairs. As soon as she recovered, though, Beyoncé picked herself back up, singing "Ring the Alarm" with her usual sass and flair. Way to get back up when you're down!
3. A Royal Embarrassment
Incorporating her fans into her performance, as usual, Mrs. Carter held the mic up to a fan to sing along. Unfortunately, that fan didn't know her lyrics, and it was Princess of York Eugenie. What resulted was an awkward situation for both the queen of pop and the princess of York. Whoops! At least she looked amazing in that blue, sparkly jumpsuit.
2. Looking Silly at the Super Bowl
The day after her showstopping performance at the 2013 Super Bowl, pictures of the performer surfaced that were, let's say, a little less than flattering. That all would have been fine if Bey's PR team hadn't asked the Internet to remove the unflattering images. Their request was obviously ignored and was enough to make the images go viral. But don't worry, Bey; we think the images are only evidence of your commitment to putting on a good show. And what better way to bounce back than performing again at the 2016 Super Bowl? Her politically-charged 2016 performace may have caused a stir, but there wasn't a single unflattering picture to come out of it.
1. She Woke Up Like This?
Beyoncé is usually such an advocate for body positivity, which is why it was so disappointing to find out that she'd been photoshopping her Instagram pictures. Of course, she's not the only star to be accused of photoshopping her Instas, but we expected better from our proudly "Bootylicious" performer. Still, we look up to her as a woman who rocks her curves so hard onstage.
