If we made a list of the best things to come out of Australia, the Hemsworth brothers would be right up there with barbecue and wallabies. They're two of the hottest stars in Hollywood right now, both starring in blockbuster movie series: The Avengers and The Hunger Games. But which Hemsworth is the hottest? We broke things down to find out.
It's undeniable that the older Hemsworth, Chris, has the name recognition of a huge Hollywood star—you need look no further than his spot on the cover of People's Sexiest Man Alive issue in 2014—but younger brother Liam isn't far behind. In fact, the two brothers competed for Chris's career-defining role of Thor, Liam making it as one of the director's final four choices, while Chris didn't even get a callback. But in the end, director Kenneth Branagh reconsidered and eventually cast Chris for the part. Of course, by that time, Liam was already receiving rave reviews for his performance as Gale Hawthorne in the adaptation of The Hunger Games, a role that would skyrocket him to fame.
Winner: Chris. Gale is no small role—especially in the upcoming The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2—but he's no match for god of thunder himself.
Of course, neither Hemsworth has an acting career to be embarrassed about, but which one comes out on top? Both brothers have starred in huge franchises. Chris has been in Thor, The Avengers, Star Trek, and Snow White and the Huntsman, all of which have sequels on the horizon, while Liam has roles in The Hunger Games, The Expendables 2, and Independence Day: Resurgence. But not every movie comes in a set of three or more. Chris has also appeared in The Cabin in the Woods, Red Dawn, Rush, and soon Blackhat, while his younger brother can be seen in The Last Song, Empire State, and Paranoia.
Winner: Chris. It's hard to compete with Chris's extensive list of smash hit movies, even if Liam is totally adorable in The Last Song.
Both Hemsworths began their acting careers in the world of Australian soap operas. Chris first appeared as Jamie Kane on "Neighbours," the soap that younger brother Liam would come to star in for two years. But Chris got his first recurring role in 2004 on a soap opera called "Home and Away." This role skyrocketed him to Australian fame. (He even appeared on Australia's "Dancing with the Stars" in 2006.)
Winner: Luke. Surprise! Despite his relatively unknown status, the oldest Hemsworth brother—he's two years older than Chris—got his acting start on "Neighbours" long before either of his more famous brothers did. Luke continues to act for TV but is starting to break into the film world as well.
The whole Hemsworth brood loves to surf and has been doing it since their childhood in Australia, but it's youngest brother Liam that really took it to the next level. The Hunger Games star surfed competitively for five years starting at the age of 13—he even wanted to be a pro surfer—before really diving into his career as an actor. These days, Liam can often be found surfing for fun near his home in Malibu.
After ending his engagement to Miley Cyrus in September 2013, Liam, 25, is finally starting to get back out in the dating pool this year. In July, it was reported that he was seeing Independence Day costar Maika Monroe, but now it looks like his friendship with Jennifer Lawrence could be heating up. Chris, 32, has been happily married to Spanish actress Elsa Pataky since 2010. The couple has been raising their three kids—daughter India Rose and twin boys Tristan and Sasha—in a bilingual household even though Chris isn't quite fluent (although he has learned one important phrase).
Winner: Chris. As much as we love Liam getting back out there, we can't get over how completely adorable Chris's little family is.
All brothers fight and compete against each other, but, rumor has it, the Hemsworth family was particularly ... competitive. Liam has said older brothers Luke and Chris would frequently use him as target practice when playing with air rifles at their home in the Australian outback. The fighting got so bad that they had to separate the brothers when their parents went out of town. Today, the sibling squabbles remain, but they don't let that affect their work lives.
Winner: Liam. Uh, don't shoot your brother, Chris!
Both Liam and Chris serve as ambassadors for the Australian Childhood Foundation, an organization that hits very close to home as their father is a social services worker. "I have the best parents you can have," Liam says. "They have worked in child protection for twenty years and have only ever given me encouragement and support. The world is a scary enough place as it is for children. It is important that home should always be a safe place for them."
Winner: Tie. We just love that the Hemsworth brothers are continuing the work of their parents together.
Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner: Chris Hemsworth just edges out his baby brother for DC's hottest Hemsworth this time. But in a few years, that title is anyone's game, maybe even Luke's.
