CoverGirl Just Made History With Its First Ever CoverBoy

Seventeen-year-old makeup artist James Charles is making history by becoming the cosmetic giant's first male spokesmodel.

A year ago, 17-year-old James Charles put makeup on his face for the first time. Yesterday, he made history in CoverGirl's announcement of him as their first male spokesmodel.

The senior in high school, whose signature touch is drawing on his own faux-freckles, has gained nearly 430k Instagram followers in the past year — a number that we're pretty sure is about to skyrocket after this historic move by the giant cosmetic brand.

Charles, who used to strictly style hair, was thrown into the world of makeup when one of his close friends needed hers done for a school dance. People loved it and the rest seemed to be history for the young and bold cosmetic artist, who has honestly mastered cat eye makeup after a year... not that we've been working on perfecting it for our whole lives or anything.

"I hope to inspire others to be confident in their own skin and to love themselves with makeup or without," Charles told TeenVogue on this new endeavor. Seriously, though, could we possibly love him anymore?


I am so beyond excited and overwhelmed and happy and astonished and of course, SHOOK, to announce that I am the newest face of @covergirl. First ever male ambassador for the brand and I am so honored and excited to be working with such an iconic brand. I started my Instagram one year ago to inspire others and as an artistic outlet to challenge myself creatively. I truly hope that this shows that anyone and everyone can wear makeup and can do anything if you work hard. Charles will be appearing in print, digital and television ads both by himself and alongside pop singer Katy Perry, who also announced the new CoverGirl CoverBoy on her social media.

Katy Perry, some seriously on-point highlighter (for real, it's perfect), and a monumental movement in breaking the boundaries of gender norms in the cosmetic industry? Cue The Lizzie McGuire Movie, because this is most definitely what dreams are made of.

"It's amazing that this industry is going genderless and I think it's so important for everyone to feel included and welcome," Charles said in his interview.

And we wholeheartedly agree. TBH, the only thing that could make this entire story better is if we discovered he was giving free lessons.
