Selena Gomez Taking Time Off to Cope with Mental Health

We're wishing Selena Gomez the very best as she spends some time away from performing to recover in a Tennessee rehab facility.

Even seemingly-superhuman Selena Gomez needs a break sometimes.

After touring around the world for the first part her Revival tour, the 24-year-old singer announced that she was taking some time off to cope with panic attacks, anxiety, and depression that have recently plagued her health. According to Us Weekly, Gomez has been taking time to recover at a rehab facility in Tennessee in addition to spending a little extra time with her family.

This announcement comes almost a year after the former Disney Channel star revealed that she had been undergoing chemotherapy and rehab in her battle against lupus — an autoimmune disease that can flare up at any time and affect various areas of the body. The mental health issues that she is currently facing can be some of the lesser known side effects of the illness. Before going public with the disease and the challenges that came with it, Gomez received plenty of negative comments from haters who assumed the worse about the time she was taking off.

On Sunday night at the American Music Awards, the 24-year-old made her first public appearance on stage since the announcement when she accepted the award for favorite female pop/rock artist.

"In 2014, this stage was actually the first time that I was authentically 100% honest with all of you," the singer bravely stated to the audience. "I think it's safe to say most of you know a lot of my life whether I liked it or not, and I had to stop. I had everything, and I was absolutely broken inside. I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down."

She went on to address the value society tends to find in social media accounts.

"I don't want to see your bodies on Instagram, I want to see what's in here," she pointed to her heart. "I'm not trying to get validation, nor do I need it anymore. All I can say is that from the bottom of my heart, I'm so grateful to be able to share what I love every single day with the people that I love."

Her powerful speech concluded with an emotional thank you to her fans.

"You guys are so damn loyal, and I don't know what I did to deserve you," she continued while the crowd cheered. "But if you are broken, you do not have to stay broken. And if that's anything, whether you respect me or not, that's one thing you should know about me is that I care about people."

From the beginning of her annoucement, fans have continued to race to social media to show their love, encouragement and appreciation of the beloved singer's honesty to the world, and we couldn't agree with them more.
