Feeling Lonely? Now You Can Just Call Sweden

If you've already called your mom and your long-distance friends and your grandpa, now you can call a random Swede!

Have you ever wanted to check in on Sweden? See how it's doing? Well now you can! Sweden recently became the first country to introduce its own phone number. That's right. You can add the country of Sweden to your contacts. Of course, you can't speak to Sweden's beautiful lowlands or towering mountaintops, but you can talk to a random Swedish local. Just call +46 771 793 336 to get connected to a Swede anywhere in the country!

While a phone number may seem like an odd way to celebrate anything, it was created by the Swedish Tourist Association to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Sweden's abolition of censorship (and to increase tourism). But unlike most scripted, manicured—and, frankly, censored—tourism campaigns, this campaign is letting the Swedish people and beautiful landscapes speak for themselves.

Since their April 6 launch, more than 9,000 people have called a Swede, with the majority of calls coming from the USA and Turkey. What you talk about can be up to you. Ask a Swede for help planning a trip; talk international politics; or simply chat with a friendly stranger. Who knows? Maybe you'll hit it off with a sexy-sounding Swedener! That "how we met" story would never be beat.

Not willing to pay for an international call? You can also tweet at a Swede.

Download the Swedish Number app from iTunes or GooglePlay to meet a Swede.

Would you call a Swedish stranger? What would you ask them?

I'm originally from the Chicagoland area, but I recently moved from beautiful Des Moines, IA to the equally beautiful Denver, CO. I spend my days reading, binge-watching TV shows, performing and listening to comedy and, of course, writing.
