Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants

Summer lovin', happens so fast... and so often! The summer fling has been a staple of American cinema since the beginning. Packed with long walks on the beach and kisses under the stars, these films make us long for the sweet and brief joy of summer romance. If your winter seems long or your summer seems relationship-free, check out these eight summer fling movies.

1. Roman Holiday
You may not have seen this classic 1953 romantic comedy starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, but you need to. On a fateful trip to Rome, Princess Ann gets the freedom and adventure she's been craving—plus an unforgettable love affair with journalist Joe Bradley—when she runs away from her controlling guardians.

2. Shakespeare in Love
This popular 1998 romantic farce, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes, is about more than a summer fling. The film depicts a fictional but entertaining story about William Shakespeare drawing inspiration for Romeo and Juliet from his ill-fated romance with a noblewoman who disguises herself as man so she can act in his play.

3. The Graduate
Dustin Hoffman stars as Ben Braddock, a young man who loses his innocence to a sexy older Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) in this 1967 dramedy. Not only is Mrs. Robinson a married woman, but Ben unexpectedly falls for her young daughter, which makes this a summer fling that's full of interesting complications.

4. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
This 2005 ensemble chick flick, starring Blake Lively, Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel and America Ferrera, focuses on a powerful friendship between four teenage girls. The film also features some provocative summer flings including one between Lena and a boy she meets in Greece, whose family has a long standing feud with hers.

5. Before Sunrise
Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy star as two young strangers who meet on a train in Europe and spend one poignant and memorable night together, knowing they may not see each other again, in this bittersweet 1995 coming-of-age romance. The movie was popular enough to spawn two sequels: Before Sunset and Before Midnight.

6. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
For an entertaining alternative to the typical summer fling movies, this 2003 romantic comedy fits the bill. Journalist Andie (Kate Hudson) and ad exec Ben (Matthew McConaughey) each have a hidden agenda for pretending to be in love, so when they really start to fall for each other, it throws them off their game.

7. Light in the Piazza
This tender and unique 1962 romantic drama which takes place during one summer in Florence, centers on an unlikely love affair between a beautiful but mentally challenged American tourist (Yvette Mimieux) and a charming young Italian (George Hamilton). Over forty years later, the story was adapted to a Tony-winning Broadway musical.

8. Dirty Dancing
Among the most loved and most memorable summer fling movies of all time is the 1987 romantic music drama Dirty Dancing, starring Jennifer Grey as Baby, an awkward young girl who is schooled in the lessons of life, love and dance by the worldly Johnny, while on summer vacation with her family at Catskills Resort.

Jennifer Lafferty
