Remember when Jimmy Fallon started doing lip sync battles on his late show, and it was funny and popular so Spike TV decided to remove Fallon from the mix (always a good idea) and turn it into a full half-hour program? Well now Apple Music wants to do the same thing with James Corden's "Carpool Karaoke."
Long one of the most popular segments on Corden's Late Late Show, "Carpool Karaoke" has produced some of the most re-watchable YouTube moments ever. Not only is it a huge amount of fun to watch pop stars sing along with their own songs while driving around the city with a clearly excited Corden, but the conversations between songs have produced some moments that have been alternately hilarious—Adele and Corden talking about name dropping at restaurants—and genuinely touching and insightful (see: Sia talking about why she wears the wig).
There have been rumors about "Carpool Karaoke" being spun off into its own standalone television show, ala Lip Sync Battle, but there was always the fear that the segment would not translate well into a full-length format. Now, with the move to Apple Music, that appears to be less of an issue as the segments can be kept shorter, similar to the way Crackle parlays Jerry Seinfield's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee into smaller segments for YouTube.
One potential stumbling block for "Carpool Karaoke" fans, however, will be the potential lack of Corden. With his duties on The Late Late Show—including keeping "Carpool Karaoke" as a recurring bit—continuing unabated, it seems highly unlikely that Corden would be willing to spend the time needed on the new show, just as it seems doubtful that Apple Music would be willing to pay him enough to make it worth his while. However, a large part of the segment's appeal is how Corden interacts with the stars he drives around with. With Cordon's musical background, highly relatable interview style, and unabashed joy for the segment, it's easy to see why the bit works so well on The Late Late Show. Whether or not Apple Music can tap into that and get the same effect with a new host will be the first major test for a potentially lucrative new series.
