While most actresses would jump at the chance to be in a movie as big as Deadpool—or to play Ryan Reynolds' girlfriend—Olivia Munn is not most actresses. She turned down the blockbuster role, she told American Way magazine, because she was done playing the girlfriend. She was tired of being the eye candy. And who can blame her?
Munn has been the girlfriend. First in 2012, alongside Channing Tatum in Magic Mike. Then, she appeared in Ride Along 2 as a homicide detective/Ice Cube's love interest. This time, she wanted kick some ass.
Her upcoming role in X-Men: Apocalypse will help her do just that. Munn will play psychic swordfighter and mutant Psylocke in the latest installation of the X-Men series, which will hit theaters on May 27.
“I thought Psylocke was always one of the most lethal characters," Munn told American Way, "and I said, ‘Yes, as long as you’re not using her to be the eye candy. She has really powerful abilities,’ And they said, ‘Yes, that’s an important part.’ ”
Assured that her character won't be all talk and no action, Munn seems excited about her latest bad-ass mutant role. “The fight scene,” she said, “could be her monologue.”
