5 Ways To Style One Affordable Denim Skirt
by Sidney Burds
Get the biggest bang for your buck with a wardrobe classic, an affordable denim skirt.
When I’m out shopping and I find a piece that catches my eye my first thought is, “What am I going to wear this with?” It helps me a.) justify a purchase and b.) truly know if this is something I will actually wear post checkout. There are some classic wardrobe staples, however, that need no justification for me—one of them being the denim skirt.
Denim is an outfit neutral, anything can be paired with it, and it can be dressed up or down. So, purchasing one affordable denim skirt means you can get several different looks on the cheap, without looking like it’s on the cheap. I’ve styled five complete looks that are all centered around a singular denim skirt. Which looks you decide to mimic are up to you, but be prepared to make a denim skirt purchase with zero buyer’s remorse.
1. Here Comes The Sun
Goodbye gloomy clouds, sunnier days are ahead! Be inspired by our closest star’s glow and pair this denim skirt with this cropped wrap top. The spicy saffron color and star scatter print make you emit your own light even on a cloudy day. A tan felt hat for shade, a string bag to easily find your things (fruit not included), and walkable espadrille-wrapped heels finish off this splendid spring look.

Helena Sandal, $59.95, Nordstrom
2. Modern Street Chic
When I was styling this look I was thinking WWACW, What Would Alexa Chung Wear? She is a denim styling queen and the inspiration for this busy city street denim skirt ensemble. I went with a crisp, white, sleeveless blouse with feminine lace-detail for the top and a cozy, black knit cardigan for the cooler spring months. For accessories I went with a pair of stylish micro sunglasses, delicate gold hoop earrings, a pop of color with a red Italian wool beret (the hat to own this year), and premium leather Nike tennis shoes for style and comfort. Wear this outfit year long and remove the hat and cardigan for summer or add tights and socks for fall.
Crap Eyewear The Wild Gift Sunglasses, $79, Urban Outfitters
Italian Wool Beret, $37.99, J.Crew
‘Taner’ Mini Hoop Earrings, $45, Nordstrom
Sleeveless Pintuck Lace-Detail Blouse, $33, Gap
Knit Cardigan, $24.99, H&M
Nike Blazer Premium Low, $85, Nike
3. Fresh Florals
This look is all about softening the raw hemmed denim skirt with delicate details. I channeled some ’70s vibes and paired the denim skirt with a flared, floral printed, tie front top. As for accessories I suggest going simple—for example I chose a pair of clear hooped, statement earrings and this gorgeous mother-of-pearl effect tote bag that includes an interior bag so your things stay put. Slip on a pair of pastel espadrilles and decorate your locks with a silk bow hair accessory and this look is good to go!
Social Butterfly Silky Bow, $18, Free People

Cadence Hooped Post Earrings Clear, $44, Anthropologie
Mini Mother-Of-Pearl-Effect Tote Bag, $59.90, Zara
Soludos C’est La Vie Smoking Slippers, $75, shopbop
4. Rock & Roll
Now that I’ve shown you some daytime looks, it’s time to take this denim skirt for a night out. Pair this skirt with a graphic t-shirt (I opted for this cool ACDC tee) and a leather jacket for when the sun goes down and the temperature drops. This western belt is a great way to define your waist and to cinch in the skirt to give you more shape. I’m obsessed with fanny packs right now but instead of wearing it around your hips I suggest strapping this cheetah one across your body like Bella Hadid. Complete this look on a high note with a pair of sexy faux snakeskin booties that will rock with you til bar close.
ASOS Leather Western Tip Waist And Hip Belt, $26, ASOS
Brynn ACDC Top, $28, Brandy Melville
Faux Leather Biker Jacket, $95, Topshop
Cheetah Hair – On Fanny Pack, $175, Your Bag of Holding
Leather Ankle Boots With Straps, $129, Zara
5. Summer Vibes
Are you eager for warmer weather? I feel you. It never hurts to plan ahead, and here’s an excellent outfit option when the temps heat up and you’re wondering what to wear with your denim skirt! Ruffles and stripes are two hot trends for 2018, and I adore this top’s one-shoulder combination of them both. Throw in a pair of statement earrings like this tiered, yellow, fringe pair, which adds fantastic color contrast with the blue of the denim and ruffled top. I lastly would add some simple slide sandals for a laid-back look and a straw tote to hold your sunscreen and other summer necessities.
