DIY Flats: Make These Sweet Statement Shoes in Minutes

I spied these pearl letter flats and knew in an instant this would be my next DIY. Here’s how to make them.

While I love a cheeky sweater, I can't resist a pair of talking flats. The right shoes can turn up the style of any outfit a notch, and this pair–inspired by the Rebecca Minkoff originals I saw here on Lucky magazine editor Eva Chen's Instagram–is pure fun. Statement flats pair well with skinny distressed jeans or a slouchy boyfriend pant and a silk blouse. While we anxiously wait for the originals to become available, you can make these DIY flats today.

Gather your supplies. You'll need:

  • Loafers
  • Leather Scrap
  • Fine tip Sharpie
  • Loose Pearls
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Scissors
  • X-acto knife

Here's how to make these flats:

1. Free hand or trace your letters onto leather scrap. Make sure the height of your letters will fill the top of your flats. Cut out the letters, using scissors or an X-acto knife to remove excess threads.
2. Working on a flat surface, place the pearls on the letters to determine spacing.

3. Secure the pearls to the letters with hot glue.
4. Position the letters on each shoe. If you need to mark the placement, do so now with a pencil. Secure each letter with hot glue.

5. Gently hold the letters in place as the glue cools. Now rock those wordy flats!

Here's a Pin-able version with how-to pictures and a finished image. Ciao!
