Share photos of yourself wearing red shoes today in memory of those lost to lyme disease and other invisible illnesses.
Today is Red Shoe Day, an international day of memorial for those lost to lyme disease and other invisible illnesses. To raise awareness, people are asked to share photos of themselves wearing red shoes, and we found the perfect eight pairs to honor their memories.
Red Shoe Day was established in 2014 in memory of Theda Myint, an Australian lyme patient. She had a love of red shoes that became the inspiration for her family and friends to create Red Shoe Day on July 25, the one-year anniversary of of Theda’s death, in remembrance of her.
From there it quickly transformed into a day not only honoring Theda’s memory, but a day of remembrance to all lost to lyme disease and other invisible illnesses globally.
The invisible illnesses range from a number of meanings. It is a broad term used to encapsulate not only those who are sick with illnesses that aren’t outwardly visible in appearance such as lyme, ME/CFS, and fibromyalgia, to name a few. It also refers to treatment that is “invisible” for those that have illnesses but are unable to find the appropriate research, treatment, and care. In addition, those who are also ill tend to be invisible to society because they are forced to stay within their own homes, often bedridden, because of these illnesses.
Those participating in Red Shoe Day are encouraged to take pictures and share them on Facebook within the Red Shoe Day: A Day of Remembrance group and also on your own timelines to help spread the word!
If you don’t have a pair of red shoes fear not! We’ve pulled some red shoes that you can wear in honor of Red Shoe Day to raise awareness and to honor the memory of those lost to lyme and other invisible illnesses.
