Fashion Fast Forward: Monaco Blue for Spring 2013

Pantone, the color institute responsible for designating each Color Of the Year, has made its pronouncement about the top color for spring 2013: Ta-dah! Monaco Blue. It’s a “classic”; shade, says Pantone, full of “stability” and “depth.” Sort of a cross between cobalt and navy, or maybe a slightly duskier sapphire. Personally, I’d call it “Facebook Blue,” but Pantone hasn’t called me for my opinion yet. This isn’t the official color of 2013—that one will be announced sometime next month. But from scouting designer collection and other trends, Pantone’s decided that next spring, everything’s coming up Monaco Blue, with touches of Emerald, Lemon Zest, Poppy Red, Tender Shoots, and Grayed Jade.

ALDO “Mandina” Booties

Elfin booties are Zoolander-levels of “so hot right now,” and blue is such a cool and unexpected shade to wear them in. Cool enough to be worth enduring a lifetime’s worth of “blue suede shoes” comments from old people who think they’re clever. ($70.00 at Zappos.com)

Cole Haan “Zoe” Structured Satchel

Another traditional silhouette with a funky twist—this Cole Haan satchel screams “professional,” even as it’s totally trendy. ($398 at Colehaan.com)

Lauren Ralph Lauren Mohair Thermal Scarf

It’ll keep you warm (and trend-forward) through the winter, and it’ll make a great spring layer once the weather warms back up. Transition items are totally our jam. ($48 at Bloomingdales.com)

Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream Shadow

Brave trend-setters do not fear blue shadows, for they know that it is only frosted blues that have strange ‘80s connotations. Modern cream blues are totally hot. Be brave. ($23 at Sephora)

Blink Ajaxx Blue Wedge Sneakers

How fly are these babies? We want a pair in every color of the rainbow, starting with this pair, which features a deep Monaco Blue suede base with brighter cobalt leather trim. (Psst! They even come in a glitter version!) ($79.99 at Heels.com)

Marimekko Jurmo Blue Bed Linens

By dipping just a bit lighter and darker than Monaco Blue and mixing all the shades with white, these Marimekko linens are sleek and modern, inspired by the “infinite blue sea” on the coast of a remote Finnish island. FANCY. ($129-$169 at Crate & Barrel)

Oversize Dipped Blue Vase

If you’re not into wearing blue because of soccer allegiances or pink skin undertones, why not spruce up your apartment with touches of Monaco Blue? This gorgeous vase from West Elm fits any décor scheme (and matches any flower). ($29.99 at Westelm.com)

Merona Crossover Knit Dress

This traditional, conservative silhouette is perfect for strict office dress codes and meeting your boyfriend’s grandparents. ($18 at Target)

Always Shirting Pocket Tunic by Splendid

Comfy, casual, easy, breezy. How else would you describe either the shirt or the color? ($59.99 at Piperlime.com)
