Must-Have Fashions for Fall
The nine pieces that everyone should be adding to their closets for fall.
I always feel lucky when my favorite fashion trends from last year stick around for another season. (I still can't get enough oxblood.) Not only does it mean that I get to wear some of my favorite pieces again and again, but it also means that I don't have to buy as many new pieces. And while you probably don't have to build an entirely new wardrobe for fall, there are always a few new items—ankle boots, leather dresses, and oversized coats, to name a few—that you could stand to add to your closet. The bigger the role they’re going to play in your wardrobe, the more you can justify spending on them. Pull out the good old cost-per-wear trick if you’re not sure whether or not something is worth it! And if you’re just itching to do some fall shopping, these are the pieces you should be looking for.
Leather and faux leather dresses can be styled so many ways that it's worth spending a little extra on one that looks and feels luxe. Navy and olive leather dresses are so trendy this season, while cognac and brown leather dresses are great year-round! If I had to pick one, a black leather dress would definitely be a must-have for fall. Layer a leather dress over a sheer blouse for the office or wear it with a statement necklace and sexy stilettos for date night.
It’s time to upgrade your boyfriend blazer. The tuxedo jacket has a slimmer fit that flatters so many body types. With leather lapels and sleek color-blocking, these tuxedo jackets will instantly step up your look. A black tuxedo jacket can be worn just like any black blazer—we love to mix styles and pair them with skinny jeans and rugged ankle boots. Add a white blazer with a mini skirt for a more polished look on your next girls’ night out.
It’s the bigger, the better when it comes to coats this season. Start looking for an oversized or cocoon coat now! My favorite is the bold red—it makes any outfit a statement look. A camel-colored cocoon coat is the prettiest neutral and will stand out against fall’s many darker hues. Balance the new oversized silhouette on top with skinny pants and pointed-toe ankle boots or pumps on the bottom.
We loved our colorful, floral, and flirty summer jewelry, but it’s time to get back to basics. This fall, there’s nothing better to top off your outfit with than a chunky gold necklace. Big chains, little chains, chain links—we love them all! Stick with simple stud earrings when you’re wearing one of these chunky gold necklaces.
I still love stacking bracelets but there are some days when a girl just can’t bother to put a lot of thought into accessorizing. The solution is a cuff bracelet. A thick cuff bracelet with an embellishment or medallion still makes a bold statement. Slip on a metal cuff with a knit sweater this fall—it’s less likely to snag on knits.
There's no handbag as elegant as a box clutch. Pare down to the essentials—most of these won’t fit more than a phone, lipstick, card, and key. It won’t help suppress the feeling that you’re forgetting something every time you leave your apartment, but you have to admit it’s sometimes nice not to be lugging around a tote with everything you think you might need! Whimsical designs, like Charlotte Olympia’s box office clutch and Bebe’s ring minaudiere can add a playful touch to more formal looks or dress up skinny jeans and pumps.
Wedge sneakers have been around for a few seasons now but that doesn't stop designers from changing things up a little. This fall we’re all about metallic sneakers and dark sneakers. A neutral pair of wedge sneakers with a few metallic details looks sporty-glam with skinny jeans, but what we really want to see is the gold pair of metallic sneakers with leather leggings and an all-black outfit. If you’re not in love with metallic sneakers, though, black wedge sneakers are always a good choice!
A pair of ankle boots has to make its way into your fall wardrobe. It’s more likely that you already have a pair of black or brown ankle boots, but what about blue or burgundy? Suede ankle boots are high on our fall wish lists! These ankle boots in some of fall’s hottest colors can be worn with patterned dresses, skinny jeans, and full skirts all season long.
Back to basics—a great pair of riding boots is one of the best things you can invest in for fall because you know you’ll have them for seasons to come. Riding boots come back every fall, and this season we love them without all the laces and buckles. These riding boots are sleek, simple, and just begging to be worn with dark denim.
