Plan Ahead for Holiday Shopping Online
Getting great gifts at great prices takes some planning ahead, even if you’re shopping online. Unlike regular retailer websites like Target.com or Macys.com, the following websites have a constantly changing inventory of high-quality designer stuff for ridiculously low prices. It’s best to check each site weekly, or sign up for weekly emails detailing the sales opening that week, because you never know what’s coming up.
Most of these websites require you to apply for membership before you can shop. There’s no charge; you just fill in some profile information and wait for an email saying you’re in. Sometimes you’re granted a membership immediately; other times it takes a few days. Do yourself a favor and sign up now so you don’t miss any great deals. Also, be warned that things on these sites sell out very quickly!
Editor’s Closet. Mostly women’s clothes and accessories from the snazziest of designers. Some things are still too pricey for us mere mortals, but you’ll always find affordable and giftable items like purses and whatnot. They always have sunglasses and shoes on sale, too, if you’re in the market for something special for yourself.
Gilt Groupe. Tons of stuff, from clothing to home decor to children’s clothes, accessories and toys. I just found a pair of ombré, sequined Chuck Taylors for almost half off! Not that I need more sparkle on my feet. Or maybe I do. PS, they also have amazing deals on vacations and such.
HauteLook. More clothes and accessories, plus home and kids stuff. There are a bunch of Demeter fragrances on sale today, like a holiday 2010 trio of egg nog, gingerbread, and mulled-cider cologne sprays—you know, if you ever feel like smelling of egg nog. Or, you could opt for the candle versions.
One Kings Lane. This is primarily home stuff, anything from furniture to candles. It’s worth requesting a membership just so you can look at the beautiful items they have, even if you never intend on buying any of it. Today they’re featuring great gift items like wooden marquetry picture frames, fancy home fragrance sets, and baby blankets.
Zulily. Specific to babies, kids, and moms, this site has everything from onesies to maternity wear as well as toys, books, and baby gear. Right now they’re offering beautiful, sexy maternity and nursing lingerie; I’m peeved I didn’t know about this when I was pregnant.
Finally, the crème de la crème of sweet deals:
Groupon. I’m sure you’ve heard of it, but have you signed up yet? The deals here are truly awesome. You can buy Groupons as gifts, so why not keep an eye out for a wine-tasting deal for a couple on your gift list, or a massage for your mom? I signed up for emails of the daily deals for four different cities since our gift list spans the entire West Coast. This is an excellent resource if you like to give the gift of activity, rather than the gift of stuff.
Definitley check out these sights well ahead of time so you have plenty of sales to choose from as the holidays approach. You will find great stuff in your price range, no matter what that may be; I bought a beautiful sequined evening bag for eight dollars from Editor’s Closet earlier this week—it was 90-something percent off the original price. Or you can buy sequin Alberta Ferretti pumps for $305, down from $1,046. If that’s your thing.
(Just a note: the items I referenced above were available the day I wrote this post, which means they probably aren’t available anymore. But that’s just fine because there are probably some pretty great things for sale now!)
