Instead of dreading the hat hair that comes with winter, it’s time to turn function into style with this DIY tutorial. Here’s how to make your own beanie in under 15 minutes!

Make your own beanie, and stand out from the crowd with this statement number. Hat hair and bad hair days are a thing of the past with this jeweled beanie. By simply taking a bracelet found on the clearance rack at my local Target, I was able to turn a boring knit hat from something you just wear when you run errands into something I could rock all day and even incorporate into my outfit, all while staying warm and cozy! The best part? This DIY project makes for a great last-minute gift for friends and family if you are stuck for ideas!

Materials: Jewel bracelet (with elastic band) or beads with holes for threading (buttons work great as well), knit beanie, needle, thread, scissors

1. Use scissors to snip the elastic thread holding the bracelet together. Remove any beads that you won't be using. Lay out the design you want to attach to your hat. Play around with spacing when mocking up your design. Note that the knit hat will stretch once you put it on, so be sure to mark if necessary with chalk or pins where the beads will be attached.

2. Thread the needle. Bring the needle up through the hat and thread through the hole in bead, leaving a short tail on the inside of the hat. With the beads I used for this DIY, I created an X-shape and reinforced the stitches 3 to 4 times. End the stitch on the inside of the hat and secure with a knot. Tie off the first stitch, too. Trim excess thread so it doesn't rub against your forehead. If you don't like the final placement of the beads once you try your hat on, simply use a seam ripper to remove the bead and try again.
