It Seems Every Famous Person Has the Super-Splurge Dior Saddle Bag—But We Found These Budget Lookalikes
by Caitlin White
Are we obsessed with the luxury Dior saddle bag? Of course! Can we afford it? Well, we’re working on it. But for now, we love these budget-conscious dupes.
When it comes to fashion, the early 2000s are officially back, and there’s no more iconic handbag from that era than the Dior saddle bag. After John Galliano debuted it in 1999, Beyoncé, Paris Hilton, and even the fictional fashionista Carrie Bradshaw rocked the designer bag, launching it into must-have status. (In Sex and the City, Carrie wore the patterned Dior saddle bag when she visited Aiden’s furniture shop for the first time. Legendary.) So, with the return of the aughts, of course, Dior brought back the kidney-shaped bag for Paris Fashion Week Fall 2018. Legitimately hundreds of Instagram influencers helped re-launch the saddle bag—admittedly in an advertising campaign that wasn’t always marked as advertising—and celebrities were spotted wearing the bags everywhere. The message was clear: the Dior saddle bag is back. Now, a year later, it’s not going anywhere.
As much as we loved the original denim and patchwork styles that screamed 1999, Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri relaunch of the original has us seeing heart eyes. There’s a totally sophisticated navy leather, a delicious cherry, and a sleek update of the logo-mania pattern. Plus, it’s even more versatile; there’s a larger size version that will be able to fit your iPhone (which we didn’t have to worry about back then), and you can wear it as a belt bag, fanny back, crossbody bag, or shoulder bag.
“I thought this collection would be an opportunity to revive [the saddle bag’s] timeless beauty,” Chiuri said in a release. “I consider this icon of the house’s recent history the perfect accessory to deal with this battle that is daily life . . . It’s so comfortable to wear with its long strap that you almost forget it’s there.”
We’re not the only ones in love. Khloe Kardashian, Jessica Alba, Kat Graham, Nina Dobrev, Katie Holmes, Kate Bosworth, Zoey Deutch, Natalia Dyer—each of these influential celebrities, in addition to countless more, have stepped out in the revamped Dior saddle bag. And now, a year after the revival, Paris Fashion Week street style is practically teeming with influencers and fashion industry titans carrying the Dior saddle bag.
But what do all these people have in common? They have the budget or the celeb status to snag a Dior. The new bag retails anywhere from $1,400 to $6,900, and vintage Dior saddle bags run the spectrum of price points. Wipe away your tear emojis though, because we found some dupes of the iconic designer bag that will have you rocking the style without shelling out the cash. Seriously, most of these are less than $50.
Hey maybe one day you’ll save up to snag a real-life Dior saddle bag, and we wish you so much luck in your shopping journey! Just consider these lookalikes practice for the real thing.
