Why Everyone Should Be Wearing A Wrap Dress This Spring
by Sidney Burds
Your new go-to sundress is here.
I’m calling it right now: The wrap dress will be the “It girl” dress this spring. Long sleeve, shorts sleeve, maxi, mini, ruffled and rolled hem we will see them everywhere. Why wear a wrap dress you may be thinking? The question isn’t why wear a wrap dress, it’s why not. This universally flattering style has already captured my heart (and paycheck) and you’re going to want to want to snatch up a few of these easy, breezy summer essentials as well.
The wrap dress design is fairly simple: It is a dress that overlaps across the front with a tie closure secured at the waist of one side. This wrapping and closure style allows the dress to accentuate your waist and curves and forms a charming V-shaped neckline. Who doesn’t look marvelous in a curve hugging dress? Answer: no one.
The wrap dress has been killing it since the ’70s when Diane von Furstenberg was accredited with creating the modern version of the wrap dress. Her interpretation had a clingy jersey fabric and was knee length and long sleeved. It was said that her wrap dress inspiration was brought on by her divorce. Instead of asking for alimony from her first marriage, she instead introduced the wrap dress as her way of making it on her own and being independent as told in W magazine.
From its birth, the wrap dress has been a symbol of independence, so it’s no wonder it has been popping up all over your Instagram feeds of late. In a time where women are demanding equal pay and equal rights and calling out sexual harassers and abusers, we’re turning to a dress style that gave one woman her financial freedom.
Plus, this design is complementary on all bodies and can be infused with your personal style. Just check out these fashion bloggers below and their takes on this effortless dress.
Need I say more? This dress is fabulous no matter how you style it. Still cold in these early spring months? Throw on a leather jacket or a crew neck sweater with ankle boots or sneakers. Already hot out? Opt for a trendy newsboy cap or wide brim hat, straw bag, and mules. No matter how you style you will always be uncomplicatedly chic.
