6 Ways to Accessorize Your Ankles with the Hottest Summer Jewelry Trend

From the runways to your favorite fashion bloggers, anklets are re-emerging into the fashion scene. Find out how you can easily rock the trend without your ankles looking tacky.

This year has constantly been giving us a nostalgic look into ’90s fashion trends. First, we took a walk down memory lane and transformed our mane with those chic scrunchies and barrettes we rocked as kids. Then, we took a page from the so-called dad style and welcomed back the comfortable velcro strap Tevas. With nostalgia running high for the decade, it was only a matter of time another ’90s trend would make a resurgence. Gear up for the warmer days ahead with your favorite childhood ’90s accessories — anklets. This season is all about decking out your legs and making a statement with the hottest gems and chains. Don’t panic. This blast from the past can be anything but tacky.

While anklets are a true throwback, they recently took center stage during the Spring/ Summer 2019 runways, showing how they can be styled to look luxury, not childish. Versace opted for a simple gold chain around the ankles of models, and Esteban Cortazar took the accessory to the next level by adding large wooden rings to a silver bracelet for a head-turning look.

With anklets making a memorable appearance on the runway, it’s not surprising the accessory has also started creeping into street style. Take Julie Sarinana. The fashion influencer, who has more than 5.2 million followers, recently added some series edge to her look by pairing a silver dainty chain with her green Golden Goose sneakers. Who Wore What creator, Danielle Bernstein, also jumped on anklet bandwagon when she spotted spotted rocking a beaded bracelet during her recent trip to Italy.

While we can’t get enough of this childhood accessory, we’re cautious about how to work them into our wardrobe to avoid looking like we stepped out from an episode from Saved by the Bell. From unexpected embellishments to revamped chains, scroll through to see our guide on how to style anklets into modern times like a true fashionista

1. Keep it Simple and Dainty

When it comes to anklets, less is always more. A subtle way to rock the trend is to opt for simple, dainty chains that you can wear daily without worrying about them clashing with your outfits. The delicate accessory, which we can totally see minimalist lover Meghan Markle wearing, can easily be dressed down or up depending on the occasion. We’re personally obsessed with simple, gold chains that have delicate charms to add a personalized touch to the piece.

2. Adorn Ankles With Puka Shells

While dainty designs seem to be the biggest obsession when it comes to anklets, you can also expect to see a lot of shells this season. With puka shells recently making a major comeback, this underwater trend is trickling into anklets for a bohemian style that is evocative to the choker souvenirs you’d buy in the past. The great thing about puka shell anklets is that they work for every summer occasion, whether you’re walking barefoot on the beach or running errands with some sneakers.

3. Make an Elegant Statement with Pearls

If you want your ankles to garner more attention this season, it’s time to whip out the pearls. The spherical gemstone is a timeless accessory that takes your ankle game to a sophisticated level. While you can wear pearl anklets in any season and with any outfit, it is an absolute must for a fun night out. I know what you’re thinking. Aren’t pearls expensive? Luckily, you don’t have to shell out several Benjamins to get the look as many store sell imitation pearls for a fraction of the cost.

Remember when you used to create those friendship bracelets at summer camp and trade them with friends. Well, your jewelry-making skills are coming in handy this season because the multi-colored threads are making a comeback on the ankles. From letter beads to intricate woven designs, these ’90s-inspired bracelets will add a youthful touch to all your summer outfits. If you’re lucky you might still remember how to create this summer pastime (or we have a tutorial in case you forgot). If not, we included two anklets you can buy to rock this style.

5. Style With Some Pumps

When you think of anklets, chances are you envision yourself barefoot at the beach with a shell-linked chain. The truth is anklets are more than just your go-to bohemian accessory. While the jewelry trend looks great with sneakers and sandals, there is something sexy and risqué about pairing anklets with a pair of pumps. During the 2017 BAFTAs, Emma Stone turned heads on the red carpet when she accessorized her legs with a pearl anklet and metallic pumps. Luckily, you don’t have to be an A-lister to rock the trend. Simply look for a delicate chain and grab your heels to bring your Carrie Bradshaw alter ego to life.

6. Layer With Other Chains

Once you figured out which anklet you want to rock, you can take your styling game to the next level by stacking them up. Like necklaces, you can create a layered look on your ankles by incorporating multiple chains. If you’re really feeling creative, try mixing metals or bringing some color with a chain with enameled jewels. And if you haven’t quite mastered the layered look, you can opt for a pre-layered anklet like this one from Ettika, which means less guesswork for you.
