The World Hates a Big Girl

I found this really great dress. It’s really pretty and exactly what I like: “Rosie the Riveter” at Shabby Apple. Then I looked at the sizes.

XXS
XS
S

That’s it. That’s all they have.

What bothers me is that I found it when I was looking under dresses for hourglass shapes. Girls that small can’t possibly have an hourglass shape. Under the tab for the body type, it said that our style icon is Marilyn Monroe, and she was a size fourteen for heaven’s sake. The girl they’re modeling it on is stick-straight, too.

When are they going to start making dresses for the bigger ladies that don’t look like muumuus or sacks? Everything plus-sized is hidden away or hideous. That whole website only has eight dresses that come in bigger sizes. Eight. And they’re all modeled on tiny girls.

It’s not like I want to stay huge forever, but while I’m in this state, can’t I look good? The other day I said I felt ugly: maybe that’s because all the clothes for people like me are designed to make us blend into the background. To hell with that—I want to look nice! I want something to wear that inspires confidence, rather than “I look awful today.” I want people to look at me and notice that you CAN look good when you’re a big girl.

If people designed great clothes for us to wear, we might have fewer body-image issues. We might be able to look in the mirror and smile on a regular basis.

So, here’s my message to the world:

My name is Kari Mathias, and I am a big, gorgeous piece of woman. I can do anything that little model can, and probably more. I was not designed to fade into the woodwork, and I want people to look at me and say, “Hey, there’s one classy lady.” So, for the love of Mike, give me some clothes to wear that reflect who I am. Oh, and when you do, put them on some girls who look like me. I think it’s safe to say that we’re all totally done with being ignored.
