Σε ένα ορεινό χωριό της βόρειας Ιταλίας, λίγο μετά το τέλος του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, ζει μια πολυμελής οικογένεια: Ο αυστηρός πατέρας και δάσκαλος, η μάνα που μοιράζει ακριβοδίκαια την αγκαλιά της σε όλα τα παιδιά, τα αγόρια και κορίτσια που μεταφράζουν το σύμπαν των μεγάλων το καθένα με τον δικό του τρόπο, η ενήλικη κόρη που ερωτεύεται έναν λιποτάκτη. Γύρω τους, οι εποχές αλλάζουν και αφήνουν τα πανέμορφα αποτυπώματά τους στη φύση, οι κάτοικοι του χωριού έχουν τις δικές τους συνήθειες και τελετουργίες και οι ζωές των απλών ανθρώπων αντιμετωπίζουν στωικά όσα τους επιφυλάσσει η τύχη.
