It's that time of year again––we're bidding farewell to the summer heat and saying hello to the fall semester. For some, it's a welcome transition, and for others, it's a tearful goodbye.
For Chicago native Jamilah Melancon, the hardest farewell she has to give is to her best friend, who's frequently featured in the 18-year-old's Snapchat and Twitter feeds. The two twerk, cook and eat doughnuts like it's nobody's business, but these besties are special for another reason: Jamilah's BFF also happens to be her grandmother, Brenda Armstrong.
because i leave to college in 4 days & this is the only person i'll truly miss😭💔 pic.twitter.com/ij3pwUzsan— jam (@jamilahM__) August 8, 2016
Melancon says her grandmother has supported her throughout her high school years––coming to basketball games, taking midnight walks, jamming to popular songs and chowing down on doughnuts and every fast food delicacy imaginable. To commemorate the duo's favorite moments, Melancon created a Flipagram photo compilation set to the most emotional song we could think of, Sam Smith's "Life Support."
How many of your best friends could give you the feels like that?
my grandma too t'd tonight. 🤘🏼 pic.twitter.com/nLjbyAWDr4— jam (@jamilahM__) July 27, 2016
And as if her grandma wasn't already the definition of one of the world's greatest best friends, she can also bust a move better than anyone we know.
she wasnt in the mood to twerk, but we still was t'd 🅿️😎✌🏽️ pic.twitter.com/QCVDNBl118— jam (@jamilahM__) July 15, 2016
For Melancon, she says that spending time with her grandma is especially important following her diagnosis with Alzheimer's disease in 2012. We spoke with the teen to find out what makes the duo's relationship so special, and if the social media goodbye she made before leaving for school doesn't make you tear up, her sincerity will. "My grandma is my best friend," she said. "She is my biggest fan and my favorite person to hang out with."
Ever since her grandmother's diagnosis, Melancon claims that their bond has only gotten stronger, and she makes every effort to spend time with her and cherish every moment they share.
Melancon officially left for Illinois Central College on August 12th, approximately three hours away from her grandma, and makes a point to "FaceTime her or call her" whenever she can.
We can only imagine how tough last week's goodbye was, but one thing's certain––Melancon is ready to take on the real world, and the love and support from her grandma is the greatest gift she'll ever receive.
Now pass the tissues, because we just can't handle this level of cuteness.
😭❤️gunna break my heart to leave you, but I'm glad you could be here for my accomplishments 💕love you bestfriend pic.twitter.com/jMctGmoCGi— jam (@jamilahM__) August 11, 2016
