A day at the beauty salon is supposed to be one of pampering, self-love, and being treated like a queen. However, for some customers, it unfortunately becomes one of judgment, criticism, and body shaming, and 31-year-old makeup artist Jamie Lopez is looking to drastically change that.
After years of being discriminated against and treated differently because of her size, Lopez took initiative and opened Babydoll Beauty Couture—an L.A.-based salon that celebrates women of all shapes and sizes. After finding success in her California endeavors, Lopez has officially expanded her business to Las Vegas. And the City of Lights had better be ready.
Lopez's salon will offer nail, makeup, hair extensions, waxing, and spray tan services. In addition to providing the whole shebang in terms of beauty and TLC, Babydoll Beauty Couture will sport size-inclusive features like waxing benches that can hold up to 800 pounds and pedicure benches that are comfy for hips up to 85 inches wide.
If you missed the viral post last week, a salon in Memphis, Tennessee, was accused of hiking its pedicure prices from $25 to $45 for customers who are overweight. The allegations went viral after a customer snapped a shot of a sign hanging in the salon (that has since been removed).
And in case you were curious, that's discrimination, and it's 100 percent not okay.
Lopez told Yahoo! Beauty on her business decision to be totally inclusive, "When women walk away from getting services done at my salon, I want them to feel beautiful, confident, and sexy."
Which, if you ask us, shouldn't be too much to ask for in any salon.
