Although we're not particularly sad to see 2016 go, this year did bring us some hope for the future of the fashion industry. From models with breathtaking birthmarks and designers celebrating body positivity, it's safe to say Hari Nef's Models.com nomination for Model of the Year is cause for celebration.
Models.com releases an annual list of the best models of the year, granting special distinctions for different categories such as Industry Favorite and Readers' Choice for social media, humanitarian work, and so on. Votes are cast by the public as well as industry professionals.
While Nef did not win Model of the Year (that distinction went to Bella Hadid), the transgender model did come home with the Readers' Choice Breakout Star of the Year Runner-Up and the Industry's Vote for Social Media Star, thanks to her impressive, vocal following.
The transgender model's massive breakout into the traditionally mainstream fashion scene led to her appearance on the hit show Transparent, and Nef has landed numerous magazine covers and has walked dozens of high-profile runway shows.
Nef's prominence in the transgender community is endlessly inspirational to many, and she often openly discusses her role as a transgender model and actress in the 21st century.
Nef told The New Yorker: "I don't want to have a perfect body. I just want to have a chill body. I just want to have a casual body that people don't stare at."
Nef's candid and honest conversation about transgender representation and body positivity in the fashion world has already earned her hundreds of thousands of fans, including us. With dynamic influences like Nef turning beauty stereotypes on their heads, the future of fashion representation is truly limitless, tolerant and, of course, breathtaking.
We hope you win next year, Nef! We're always rooting for you in all you do.
