New LEGO Ideas Proposal Plans to Celebrate the Leading Ladies of NASA

Maia Weinstock, deputy editor of MIT News, has proposed a new LEGO set celebrating the women of space.

When people think stars and skies, they tend to think Neil Armstrong or Buzz Lightyear. Though it may seem like the U.S. space program is dominated by men, over 40 American women have gone into space and innumerable others have worked diligently at NASA as cosmonauts, analysts, researchers, and engineers.

To honor and commemorate these women, deputy editor of MIT News Maia Weinstock proposed a new LEGO set featuring five famous female astronauts. Here's what you need to know about these leading ladies.

Sally Ride: The first American woman to go to space.

Margaret Hamilton: The computer scientist who created the on-board flight software that made the Apollo missions successful.

Katherine Johnson: The mathematician who calculated trajectories that made the Mercury and Apollo programs possible.

Mae Jemison: A medical doctor and the first African-American woman to go to space.

Nancy Grace Roman: Also known as the "Mother of Hubble," she was the first female executive at NASA.

Their incredible resumes speak for themselves, but their accomplishments are highly undermined compared to their male counterparts. "Women have played critical roles throughout the history of the U.S. space program," Weinstock writes in her LEGO Ideas proposal. "Yet in many cases, their contributions are unknown or under-appreciated—especially as women have historically struggled to gain acceptance in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)."

Weinstock's sentiments behind this proposal tugged at the heartstrings of many, including NASA.

LEGO Ideas encourages people to submit their ideas for new LEGO series. If an idea garners more than 10,000 supporters, it's sent in for an official review. Weinstock's proposal has already gathered over 5,000 supporters since Monday, so things are definitely looking up.
