Asking For A Friend: What Should I Do About My Nipple Hair?

Yep, you're not alone—lots of women get nipple hair. Is there something you should be doing about it? Short answer: Not necessarily.

Listen, we're all empowered, modern, confident women. We know about nipple hair! It's there, it's hair, get used to it. Maybe you let yours stick around, or maybe you're looking for ways to get rid of it as soon as it sprouts. If you fall into the second group, though, you may have wondered how you should be nixing the hairs. Surely the wrong move could harm your nerve-filled nipples! (If they're already red and sore post-run, we've got help.)

"Many women have some nipple hair, and unless it's rapidly growing or excessive, it's likely not anything to be concerned about," confirms Alyssa Dweck, M.D., an ob-gyn in Westchester County, NY. And if you've been using your tweezers to get rid of them, you're not alone. "Plucking is probably the most common way to remove the hairs," she says. But trimming, even waxing them is fair game too, says Draion Burch, M.D., an ob-gyn based in Pittsburgh, PA (a.k.a., Dr. Drai). Just stay away from depilatory or shaving creams. "They can harm your mammary glands," he warns.

"If rapid growth occurs all of a sudden, though, see your gyno for an evaluation," suggests Dr. Dweck. Adds Dr. Drai: "A little hair is normal. A lot is not—it can be a sign of polycystic ovary syndrome." If you think you may have more hair than normal or if it's sprouting between your breasts rather than just around your nipples, get a checkup.
